"Prisoners, do you say?" answered Don Quixote. "Then I will do my duty. I must help those who are taken by wicked men."

"But the prisoners are the wicked men," said Sancho. "They are receiving their fair punishment."

But Don
Quixote did not listen to his words. He rode towards one of the officers. Very politely, he asked if he could talk to the unlucky men about their sad condition. The officer agreed, and the knight spok
e to the first man in the line. He asked him what he had done wrong.

"I was in love," said the man, laughing.

"In love?" asked Don Quixote, thinking this was a stor
y of knights and ladies.

"Yes," said the prisoner, "in love with some fine clothes; I ran off with them. But the law officers took the clothes from me. They rewarded my true love wit
h a hundred blows on my back and three years in prison."

The next prisoner was an old man with white hair. He had done many wicked things. After him came a man about thirty years old
. He was chained more tightly than the others. Don Quixote asked who he was and why he was chained like this.

"This is Pasamonte," answered one of the officers.
