He refused, said Sancho, to go back to Toboso until he had won some great battle. This would make him famous enough to go before her.

Sancho then led the priest and the barber to the wild valley. They found the knight sitting by a rock, thinking. He was not wear
ing his armour.

Don Quixote was surprised and pleased to see the priest. "What business has brought you so far from home?" he asked.

The Priest Te
lls a Story

The priest's story was that he had been to Seville. There he had received some money, sent by an uncle in the West Indies. Coming back from Seville, s
ome prisoners had robbed him of all his money. "And people say," he continued, "that these wicked men were set free by a brave and wild man. This man defeated a large number of police who were with them. May God forgive him, whoever he was, for this wild and wicked act!" The priest had heard about the adventure with the prisoners from Sancho. So he now said this to show the knight the foolishness of it.

Don Quixote said nothing, but looked sorry. He did not want to tell the priest that he had done this.
