The knight would have died because of his foolish act. But the prisoners now help
ed him by throwing stones.

Sancho helped too, by taking the keys from the hurt officer. He unlocked Pasamonte's chains, and the robber picked up a sword. He attacked the three off
icers very fiercely, and they soon ran away.

The prisoners were now free from their chains. They immediately robbed the hurt officer of everything he had. Then they came to Don Qu
ixote to hear what he wanted to say to them.

Don Quixote Speaks to Them

"Friends," he began, "I have been able to help you. I am
sure you are grateful. You may show this by doing what I ask. I want you to take this long chain which I took from your necks. Go to the city of Toboso, and visit the lady Dulcinea. Tell her the story of this great adventure, which has made you free men. When you have done this, you may go where you wish."

"Sir," said Pasamonte, "what you ask is impossible. We have run away from the law. How can we go along the roads carrying this great chain? We must separate and hide, because many men will come to look for us."
