With the travelers, there was a squire from the north of Spain. He heard what
Don Quixote said. He did not want the travelers to visit Toboso, which was a much longer journey. So he held the knight's lance and cried, "Go away, sir! Let the carriage pass, or I shall put my swor
d through you."

Don Quixote answered him very calmly, "You are not a knight or a gentleman, so I cannot punish you for your foolish bravery."

"Not a gentleman?" shouted the squire
angrily. "Put down your lance and take your sword. We shall soon decide if what you say is true."

Another Fight

D
on Quixote dropped his lance and took his sword. The squire defended himself well, and each one began to strike the other. They fought like old enemies, and nobody could separate them. The squire shou
ted, "If anybody stops me, I will kill you all!"

The squire aimed a great blow which landed on Don Quixote's shoulder. But Don Quixote's armour protected him, and he was not cut.
