The words that get stressed when we speak English aloud can affect the meaning of the words we say.

Listen to this clip of a customer talking to a car salesman.
  LIsten to the intonation.
  Pay special attention to the words in italic.
Note how the speaker emphasises key words such as verbs and nouns in order to show how angry they are.

Now listen to this clip of a customer talking to a waitress in a restaurant:
  Listen carefully to the intonation patterns.
  Pay special attention to the words in italic.
The stress on words tells us that it is the taste and not the smell or the look of the fish that makes the woman think it isn't fresh. But it also tells us about her attitude. Is she annoyed ? How do you know ?
