"上有天堂，下有苏杭"。美丽的杭州有着著名的西湖十景，它们风格迥异，各具特色。我对其中位居第二的"曲苑风荷"情有独钟。

It is said that just as there is paradise in heaven, there are Suzhou and Hangzhou on earth. Hangzhou is known to the world for its ten scenic sights of the West Lake, which are distinguished from one another in styles. But I particularly like the Lotus in the Breeze at Crooked Courtyard very much, which ranks second among the ten scenic sights.

      "曲苑风荷"过去被称为"曲院风荷"。曲院是南宋时期朝廷开设在西湖边的酿酒作坊。酒工取在此流入西湖的金沙涧水制曲酿酒，并在湖中种植荷花。每逢夏季，从酒坊传出阵阵酒香，伴随着湖风和荷花香气，令人不饮亦醉。故此得名"曲院风荷"。康熙皇帝南巡时，在这里看荷听曲，为此地书名立碑，还在苏堤跨虹桥畔修建了碑亭。

The Crooked Courtyard is originally an official brewery built near the West Lake in the Southern Song Dynasty. The workers made wine with the water of Jinshajian which flew into the West Lake, where they grew a lot of lotus. In summer, when a gentle breeze ruffled the surface of the lake, the smell of wine was mixed with the fragrance of lotus, giving people a kind of pleasant intoxication, and that was also the reason for the name of the scenic spot. When Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty made an inspection tour in the Southern China, he enjoyed to appreciate the lotus and listen to music here, and autographed name of the place on a stone tablet which is sheltered in a pavilion by the famous Su Causeway at present.

       不过，只有正当盛夏之际，亲临风荷景区，才能真正体会到"接天碧叶无穷碧，映日荷花别样红"的美景。辽阔的水面上分布着各类的荷花，姿态万千，尽显妖娆姿态。

However, only when you come to the place in the height of summer can you really experience the view when lotus leaves are connected with each other to as far as you can see, and the flowers are extremely red bathing under the sun. The flowers of different shapes are scattered on the lake, presenting an infinite variety of enchanting postures.

       在西湖，游人们可以坐在岸边古色古香的水榭楼台中极目远眺，也可以走在造型各异的石桥上近看田田莲叶和出淤泥而不染的"花中君子"。阵阵荷花香气随风而来，清新淡雅，沁人心脾。让人在视觉和嗅觉上得到双重享受。

By the West Lake, people can have a distant view from the antique waterside pavilions or enjoy the elegant lotus when walking on the stone bridges of different styles. The light and fresh gentle air blow here and there the fragrance of the lotus flowers, bringing to the people the sweet, intoxicating smell which is quite helpful to refresh one's mind.

       我本就偏爱荷花，爱它的"出淤泥而不染，濯清涟而不妖。中通外直，不蔓不枝，香远益清，亭亭静植"。这次一偿心愿，将千姿百态，色彩各异的荷花尽收眼底。慢慢走在大大小小的石桥上，犹如走在荷花之中。微微弯腰侧身，那亭亭玉立的身姿，便在手边。但牢记着"可远观而不可亵玩"的"古训"，没有冒犯。

I've always had a preference for lotus, because it grows out of ooze yet remains stainless; although purified by the water, it is never coquettish. It is hollow inside and straight outside, neither spreading about nor branching out. Standing in an erect and symmetrical posture, its subtle perfume is wafted far and wide. This time I have had a superb panorama of the lotus by the West Lake. When strolling on different stone bridges, I feel as if roaming in the sea of lotus. As I bend down I can reach out for a lotus very easily, but I keep in mind that the lotus is to be appreciated reverently from a distance, and never to be played blasphemously.
