The Sixty-sixth Birthday

A birthday is an important day, a holiday of one's own. People attach much importance to birthdays whether they are at home or abroad. But in China, there are many interesting customs for birthdays. For example,  one's seventy-seventh birthday is called 喜寿, because the cursive script of "喜" is similar in appearance to the verticalwriting of "seventy-seven". One's eighty-eighth birthday is called米寿, because the character "米" when disassembled forms the number "eighty-eight" One's ninety-ninth birthday gets its name from白寿, because the character of "白" is "百" without the stroke "一".One's one hundred and eighth birthday is called 茶寿, because the upper part "double 十" of the character "茶" is twenty after being adding together, and "入"in the middle is separated becoming "eight". "木" at the bottom of the character is "ten" and "eight", which added together is "eighteen". With the middle and bottom part forming "eighty-eight" and upper part of "twenty" are combined, it becomes one hundred and eight in total.

Although not everybody will experience all the special birthdays mentioned above, the sixty-sixth birthday is an important and uncommon birthday. According to Chinese tradition, the sixty-sixth birthday will be celebrated on the day of January 6th (based on lunar calendar). The Spring Festival is the most important traditionalholiday for Chinese people, full of festivalatmosphere welcoming the spring. Relatives and friends come together to celebrate sixty-sixth birthdays with seniors. Children will send clothes in blue color, because the Chinese word for blue is a homonym of the word for "stop", which suggests the meaning of preventing the passage of time and preserving eternal youth before reaching sixty-six. In addition, they will have special food. They make sixty-eight dumplings with six liang (a unit of weight) of meat and six liang of flour. After cooked, one is consecrated to the heaven, and the other to the earth. The rest will be eaten by the birthday person in one day.

On January 6th restaurants will be bustling with the noise and excitement of the day with people all around. Some families also prepare big birthday cakes. Amidst blessings of health and longevity, the people who celebrate their birthdays make wishes, blow out candles and propose toasts raising the birthday party to a climax.
