They were all wearing strange clothes, and masks, and Don Quixote looked round wildly at them. He thought that they were wicked magicians from the castle. To make Don Quixote believe this, the barber spoke to him in a low voice through the darkness.

"Do not be afraid, O Knight Ful
l of Sadness, because you are a prisoner in this cage. In this way, and only in this way, can you win the great success for which you are hoping. And you, good and true squire, do not be worried when you see that bra
ve knight, your master, in this strange condition. I promise you that you shall have your reward."

The barber spoke these words from behind the inn door, and everybody thought he spoke very well.

Don Quixote Returns Home

Sancho now came, and he was angry to see his master in a cage. But Don Quixote had been comforted by the bar
ber's words about a successful future. He told Sancho not to worry. The priest and the barber then said good-bye to the inn-keeper, and his wife and daughter. Then the horses started, pulling the c
art with the cage in which lay the poor, mad knight.
