"You need not be afraid of that," said Don Quixote. "He will promise, as a kn
ight, to pay you the money, and not hurt you."

"But, sir, you are mistaken," said the boy. "This man is not a knight. He is the rich farmer, Haldudo, who lives at Quintanar."

"He can also be a Knight," answered Don Quixote.

"True," said the farmer. "Come with me, boy, and I promise to pay you all the sixty-three reals."

"Do not fail to pay him," said Don Quixote. "If you do not pay him, I shall know about it, because I am Don Quixote de la Mancha, the defender of the helpless."

Then he rode away, and left
the master and the boy together.

When Don Quixote Had Gone

When Don Quixote had gone, the farmer turned to the boy and said with a wicked smile, "Com
e here, boy. I will pay you as the good knight ordered me to." Saying this, he took the boy roughly by the arm and tied him to the tree again. Then he almost beat the life out of his body. When the farmer was quite tired out, he untied the boy and said, "Now go and find your brave defender, and tell him how I have paid you."
