Contracts are documents that are signed by two parties, or groups of people. Usually, contracts are for a service rather than a product. They are also usually for a short period of time or a limitedamount of work. For example, a trainer may sign a contract with a company before she gives a training course to the company's employees.

Contracts can be quite confusing to read and write. This is because they have their own style of language that is quite different from other styles of English. To get a better feel for the style of language used in contracts, try exercise 1 and 2. in the next page. The first exercise will show you the kind of grammar used in contracts, and the second exercise will teach you some common phrases found in contracts.

In the written activity, you will be asked to change an excerpt from a contract into more formal language. Remember the phrases that you have learned in the exercises.

Excerpt:

When is the work completed?

You will complete it by or before the 20th of March. The work includes things like writing, editing, adding graphs and pictures if they are needed, and anything else the manager feels you need to do.

When you submit the work, the manager will look at it and give it back to you 24 hours later. When he gives it back to you, he'll also give you a document that lists things you should change. You need to make these changes within four days.

The manager will approve the final version, and he will give you a document telling you so.

When are you paid?

You'll be paid when you finish the work. For more information on this, see section 2.1

As we agreed before, you'll be paid in Chinese RMB.

If we both agree, payment can be in cash or we can direct deposit it into your bank account.
