On the 19th February 1473 Nicholas Copernicus, the Polish astronomer, was born. He is said to be the founder of modern astronomy. After returning from his studies in Italy, Copernicus spent the rest of his life in sheltered and academic circles. He made his observations with the naked eye, as a hundred more years were to pass before the invention of the telescope. In 1530 he completed his great work, which asserted the earth rotated on its axis once daily and traveled around the sun once every year. This was a fantastic idea and went against the religious beliefs of the time. Until then, thinkers in the Western world thought the earth was a fixed mass located at the centre of the universe and that all the celestial bodies, including the sun and the stars, revolved around it.
Copernicus died in 1543 and never knew the stir his work would cause. However, two other Italian scientists, who embraced his work, suffered greatly at the hands of the powerful church inquisitors. Giordano Bruno suggested that there might be other solar systems and life might also exist there. For such blasphemy he was burned at the stake in 1600. In 1663 Galileo Galilei was placed under house arrest, for the rest of his life, for subscribing to Copernicus's theory.
