On the 9th of July 1877 the first Wimbledon lawn tennischampionship was staged and on the 7th of July 1985 Boris Becker became the youngest winner at Wimbledon at the age of seventeen. He went on to win two more titles. It is the oldest tennischampionship in the world, four years older than the US Open, and is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments. It is widely regarded amongst players, fans and pundits to be the most prestigious tennistournament in the World. The tournament is held annually in the London suburb of Wimbledon, England, at The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club from late June to early July.
The scoring in tennis may seem a little strange. For example typical scores in a game could be 15/Love. 30/Love. 30/15. 30 all. 40/30. Deuce. Advantage Smith. Game to Smith. This seems a strange way of marking points. What can it all mean?
Firstly tennis is generally agreed to have originated in France. So "Love" most people think comes from the French word for an egg, "L'oeuf ", and an egg is round like a zero, symbolising nothing. Some other people say it comes from the English phrase "neither for love nor for money" in other words, for nothing. Or to play "for the love of the game" (i.e.for nothing).
Deuce, when an advantage of two points has to be gained in order for a player to win, is taken from the French word "deux" meaning two.
The word tennis itself is thought to come from the French word "tenez" meaning "take this" or "here you go".
One explanation of the origins of 15, 30, and 40 is a clock face. A clock would hang at one end of the tennis court and one hand would be moved after each point was scored. When the hand reached 60 the game was over.
