请注意这个句子在John和Mary之后都有逗号。用了逗号后，表示提问人心中已知对方希望有人陪同他去，至于希望谁陪同还未肯定，故提此问，征求对方意见。第一句在John和Mary之后不用逗号，涵义也就大不相同。它表示提问人想征求对方这样的意见:"是希望John或Mary两人当中有一个人陪他去？还是不用人陪他去，他自己一个人去。"
