纠正英语口语表达错误(二)

Example 6:

我很爱我父母。

Incorrect English:

"I very love my parents。"

Correct English:

"I really love my parents 。"OR

"I love my parents very much。"

解释:

不要把"very"放在一个动词前。强调动词有两种较简单的方法:第一,可将"really"放在动词前,当学生翻译"我很爱。。。。。。","我很想。。。。。。"等时,"really"正好表达了这层意思;第二,可将"very much"放在宾语后面,既句子结尾处。

Explanation:

Do not put word "very"before a verb。There are two easy ways to emphasize the verb。First, you can put the word "really"before the verb。This will give the meaning that students are looking for when they translate "我很爱。。。。。。","我很想。。。。。",etc。Second, you can put the words "very much"after the object,at the end of the sentence。

Examples:

"I really like eating Japanese food。"OR

"I like eating Japanese food very much。"

"I miss my little brother very much。"OR

"I really miss my little brother。"

注意A:

你也可以在一个句子里同时用这两种方法加强强调效应。

Note A:

You can also use both types of emphasis together in one sentence for extra emphasis.

Example:

"I really want to go to Tianjin very much。"

注意 B:

单词"really"还有"真的"这层意思。根据所给出的句子的上下文,你可以辩别"really"的意思。

Note B:

The word "really"can also have another different meaning which is "真的"。The context of the sentence in any given situation should tell you which meaning "really"has .

Example:

Mike:"I don't believe that you passed the computer test。"

Derek:"I really passed it!I swear!I'll show you the report."

Example 7:

"Later"and "before"(。。。后/。。。前)

学生们经常误用"later"和"before",让我们先看"later"。

My students often use the words "later"and "before"incorrectly。Let's start by looking at"later":

我很饿,我们五分钟后吃饭吧。

Incorrect English:

"I'm really hungry.Let' s eat lunch five minutes later。"

Correct English:

"I'm really hungry.Let's eat lunch in five minutes。"

解释:

表达"从现在开始的某段时间以后"时,我们必须用"In +某段时间",而不能把"以后"译成"later"。在英语里,我们不能用"某段时间+later"。要表达"从现在开始的五分钟以后"。应该说"in five minutes"。在下面的例子里,这种说法适于表达任何长度的时间。

Explanation:

To express "(a certain amount of time)in the future from now" we have to say "in(a certain amount of time)"。We cannot just translate "以后"as "later"。We cannot say "(a certain amount of time)later。"To express "five minutes in the future from now" we say "in five minutes"。Notice in the following examples that this way of speaking can be used for very short, very long, and moderate lengths of time。

Examples:

"In six months,I m going to leave China and go home to work as an engineer。"

"Mary hopes to be rich and married with kids in twenty years。"

(on the phone)"I` m going to leave my apartment in ten minutes。It takes twenty minutes to get to your apartment by bike,so I` ll probably get to your apartment in half an hour。"

"The sun will blow up and engulf the earth in about 100 million years。"

再看"before":

Now let` s look at "before":

我两周前买了这本书。

Incorrect English:

"I bought this book two weeks before。"

Correct English:

"I bought this book two weeks ago。"

解释:

要表达"从现在开始的某段时间以前",我们必须用"某段时间+ago"形式,不能把"以前"译成"before",我们不能用"某段时间+before"形式. 表达"现在开始的两周前"应说"two weeks ago". 在下面的例子,这种说法适用于任何长度的时间。

Explanation:

To express "(a certain amount of time)before now"we have to say "(a certain amount of time) ago."We cannot just translate "以前"as "before. "We cannot say "(a certain amount of time)before."To express "two weeks before now"we say "two weeks ago. "Notice in the following examples that this way of speaking can be used for very short, very long, and moderate lengths of time.

Examples:

"Julie just left thirty seconds ago。She is probably walking down the stairs."

"I cooked this rice three hours ago。It` s too cold to eat now."

"Ten years ago Ian graduated from Harvard University with a biology degree".

"The dinosaurs lived 65 million years ago."

Example 8:

你对中国的看法怎么样?

Incorrect English:

"How do you think about China?"

Correct English:

"What do you think about China" OR

"How do you like China?"

解释:

当我们询问某对某事的看法时,我们不能说:

"How do you think about ___?" 这是错误的.我们应当说: "What do you think about ___?" 或"How do you like ___?", 也可说"What do you think of ___?"

Explanation:

"When asking for someone's opinion about something we cannot ask, "How do you think about ___?" This is incorrect. We can only ask "What do you think about ___?" or "How do you like ___?" We can also say "What do you think of___?"

Examples:

"What do you think about George Bush, Jr. ?"OR

What do you think of George Bush, Jr.?" OR

"How do you like George Bush, Jr.?"

"What do you think about the movie` Titanic`?" OR

"What do you think of the movie` Titanic`?" OR

"How do you like the move` Titanic`?"

"What does the teacher think about our low test scores?" OR

"What does the teacher think of our low test scores?" OR

"How does the teacher like our low test scores?"

Example 9:

A: 我英语说得很差劲.

B:我的英语不好.

Incorrect English:

A: "I speak English very bad."

B: "My English is not well."

Correct English:

A: "I speak English very poorly."

B: "My English is not good."

解释:

修饰动词,必须用副词,修饰名词,则用形容词。"Bad"和"good"是形容词,而"badly","poorly"和"well"这类副词只能用来修饰动词。

Explanation:

When we use a word to modify a verb,it must be an adverb. When we use a word to modify a noun, it must be an adjective."Bad" and "good" are adjectives that can be used to describe nouns. "Badly," "poorly", and "well" are adverbs that can be used to describe verbs.

Examples:

"My English is good."

"My English is bad. "

"My English ability is low."

"My English ability is high."

"As an American, l speak English very well. I speak Spanish poorly."

"Ernest plays ping pong extremely well. He is the school champion."

Example 10:

怎么办?

Incorrect English: "How to do?"

Correct English:

"What can we do?" OR

"What should we do?" OR

"What are we going to do?"

解释:

我们不能总是把 "怎么" 直译成"how"。上面 "Correct English" 中的几种"'怎么" 的译法是很恰当的。

Explanation:

We cannot just translate "怎么办" as "how". Some proper translations of "怎么办" are above.

Examples:

Larry: "There is a comet coming towards Earth! It` s going to hit in two hours!"

Megan: "Oh my God! What are we going to do?!"

Waiter: "I` m sorry, sir. There are no seats in the restaurant right now. You` II have to wait."

Customer 1: "What should we do?"

Customer 2: "Let` s go to another restaurant."
