纠正英语口语表达错误(六)

Example 26:

动词转换释例 --- "feel"与 "felt"

有些学生不懂得如何转换动词形式, 尤其是 "to feel"这个动词。它的过去式是"felt",需要根据时态转换相应的形式。

Many students often fail to conjugate the verb "to feel"when they should be using the past tense .The past tense of the verb "to feel "is "felt".

Incorrect English: "On that day two years ago , I feel very happy."

Correct English: "On that day two years ago , I felt very happy."

Chinese: "两年前的那天,我感到非常开心。"

更多的例子: More examples:

"When we heard about the tragedy , we felt terrible."

"On his daughter's wedding day , he felt proud and excited to walk his daughter down the aisle of the church. "

Example 27:

-ed与- ing

学生们也经常混淆"bored"和"boring","excited"和"exciting"等等诸如此类的词。"Bored"和"excited"之类的词常修饰事物给我们带来上述的情绪。例如,如果一部电影不好看,它使我们感到无聊,我们就说我们"bored";而导致我们"bored"情绪的事物是电影,所以我们说电影"boring"。

Examples:

"That movie is really boring. The plot is dull and I don't like the characters. I was really bored while watching it."

Chinese: "那部电影很无聊, 情节枯燥, 我不喜欢其中的角色。看这部电影时,我实在感到无聊。"

解释:

电影让我"bored"它是一部 "boring"电影。

"Climbing the Yellow Mountain is quite tiring. It took us six hours to reach the top. When we finally got there, I was extremely tired."

Chinese: 爬黄山很累。我们花了六个小时到了山顶。当我们最后到达那里,我非常累。

解释:

爬黄山让我"tired",它是"tiring"。

"I am frightened at the speed at which AIDS is spreading in Africa. The statistics are rather frightening."

"Watching the flag-lowering ceremony at sunset on Tiananmen Square on National Day was really

inspiring. I felt inspired."

"Watching Jackie Chan do martial arts always makes me excited. His movies are exciting."

Example 28:

单词("vocabulary" 与"vocabulary words")

Incorrect English:

"I want to learn more vocabularies."

Correct English:

"I want to learn more vocabulary words."

Chinese:

我想多学点单词。

解释:

"Vocabulary"意思是人们知道的、学到的和使用的词,"单词"应译成"vocabulary word"。

Examples:

"Considering he's only nine years old, he has an excellent vocabulary."

"This list of English vocabulary words is too advanced for first-year English students."

Example 29:

开汽车/开飞机("to drive"/ "to fly")

Incorrect English:

"A pilot drives a plane."

Correct English:

"A pilot flies a plane."

Chinese:

飞行员开飞机。

解释:在汉语中,"to drive"和"to fly"都可以用来表示"开"的意思。学生们经常把"to fly"误说成"to drive"。在英文中,表示操作飞行物的动作的时候,我们用"to fly"。

Examples:

"The pilot will fly the plane from Guangzhou to Sydney. "

"The ability to fly a helicopter is very useful in the military."

Other examples of uses of the verb "to fly":

"My son enjoys going to the park every Saturday to fly his kite."

"All schools in China fly the Chinese flag."

Example 30:

人("person"/"people")

Unnatural English:

"These are five persons in each group."

Natural English:

"These are five people in each group."

Chinese:

每组有五个人。

上面的第一个句子应该说是对的。可是"persons"这个词听起来不是很自然。通常情况下,如果我们想用"person"的复数形式,应当用"people"而不是"persons"。"persons"是很正式的词,比如说,它经常用于官方语言中。

Explanation:

The first sentence above is not wrong, but"persons"sounds a little unnatural. Generally if we want to use the plural of "person", we say "people", not "persons". "Persons" is very formal and used, for example, in official language.

Example:

"These are thirty-four people in the freshman English class and twenty-eight people in the sophomore English class."

"My family has four people-my mother, father, and sister."

"A lot of people went to the dance at the student activity center on Friday night."

"Millions of people were killed in World War ll."

(formal use of "persons") "Any person or persons littering on public property will be fined one thousand dollars."
