第三部分 阅读理解(共20小题,每小题2分,满分40分)

A

"Mummy, I don't know what to play with." Steve interrupts his mother, who is talking to a friend, for the fourth time. "You've got a room full of toys!" his mother says, impatiently. In fact it is the jumble of toys that is to blame for four-year-old Steve's lack of interest in his dolls, cars and packed animals. Each morning he tips out three washing baskets of toys all over his floor, listlessly pulls out something and shortly after is standing at his mother's desk or following her into the kitchen saying: "Mummy, I am bored."

A family therapist(心理医生)explains why children lose interest when they have a whole "toy shop" at home: "According to their brain development, little children are in a position to judge the quality of a variety of things at once. There is always just one favorite toy for the moment. All the rest are left lying about. "What can parents do to stop their children from being oversupplied with toys? Under no conditions simply make something disappear without the child's knowledge. If he/she takes no notice of a toy, a parent can ask if it can be stored or given away. Be warned though the child will always say he/she wants it then! A talk with relatives and friends may also help. Lyn is the mother of four-year-old Jessie, and we like her way. A small set of shelves in her child's room holds the toys and the books that are the current(at present) favorite. When it seems to her that her daughter is tired of these toys, they put them away in a box together and selects some other toys from a cupboard in another room. The box of "old" toys goes into the cupboard. When her children says she is "bored", they also get something from her cupboard-it may be something she has had for some time but because she hasn't seen it for a while it is almost like a new toy.

Some favorite toys stay out all the time, and there is collection of dolls which sits in the corner, but in this way Lyn has found that she has fewer toys to put away at the end of the day and her daughter always has something "fresh" to play with.

56. Steve interrupted his mother several times because ______.

A. he felt uninterested in his toys B. he disliked his mother's guest

C. he didn't have enough toys to play with D. he hoped his mother would play with him

57. According to the therapist, children often complain that they have nothing to play with because ______.

A. they can't play alone for a long time

B. they are too young to play with so many toys

C. they are too lazy to pick out their favorites

D. they lack the ability to value too many things at a time

58. Which of the following can be used in place of "jumble" in the first paragraph?

A. simple choice B. mixture in disorder C. ordinary appearance D. same shape

59. Which is the advice given to parents in the text?

A. Buy fewer toys for their children.

B. Form good habits for their children.

C. Spare some time to play with their children

D. Put away some toys without telling their children.

In a great many cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work every day. In New York City, some bike riders have even formed a group called Bike for a Better City. They declare that if more people rode bicycles to work, there would be fewer automobiles in the downtown part of the city and so less dirty air from car engines.

For several years this group has been trying to get the city government to help bicycle riders. For example. They want the city to draw special lanes for bicycles only on some of the main streets, because when bicycle riders must use the same lanes as cars, there are accidents. Bike for a Better City feels that if there were special lanes, more people would use bikes.

But no bicycle lanes have been drawn. Not everyone thinks it is a good idea-they say it will slow the traffic. Some store owners on the main streets don't like the idea-they say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business.

The city government has not yet decided what to do. It wants to keep everyone happy. On weekends, Central Park-the largest place of open ground in New York-is closed to cars, and the roads may be used by bicycles only. But Bike for a Better City says that this is not enough and keeps fighting to get bicycle lanes downtown.

63. Cars are not permitted to enter Central Park on weekends _________.

A. so that Bike for a Better City is pleased

B. so that everyone is happy

C. and bicycle lanes are drawn

D. but Bike for a Better City is still not satisfied

Every country tends to accept its own way of life as being the normal one and to praise or criticize(批评、责备) others, as they are similar to or different from it. And unfortunately, our picture of the people and the way of life of other countries is often a distorted(扭曲) one.

Here is a great argument in favor of foreign travel and learning foreign languages. It is only by traveling in a country and getting to know its inhabitants(居民) and their language that one can find out what a country and its people are really like. And how different the knowledge one gains this way frequently turns out to be from the second-hand information gathered from other sources! How often we find that the foreigners whom we thought to be such different people from ourselves are not very different at all!

Differences between peoples do, of course, exist and, one hopes, will always continue to do so. The world will be a dull place indeed when all the different nationalities behave exactly alike, and some people might say that we are rapidly approaching(走近) this state of affairs. With the much greater rapidity and ease of travel, there might seem to be some truth in this at least as far as Europe is concerned. However this may be, at least the greater ease of travel today has revealed (显示)to more people than ever before that the Englishman or Frenchman or German is not some different kind of animal from themselves.

64.Every country criticizes ways of life in other countries because they are ______.

A. distorted B. normal

C similar to each other D. different from its own

65.One who travels in a foreign country and learns its language will______.

A. find out what its people are like

B. argue in favor of this country and the language

C. know the country and its people better

D. like its inhabitants and their language

66.The knowledge one gains by traveling in a foreign country is often______.

A. from second-hand information

B. gathered from other sources than (from) its inhabitants

C. gained from the arguments about the country

D. different from what one had before the travel

67.In this passage, the author wants to say ______.

A. differences between people will gradually disappear because of easy of travel

B. differences between people do exist even though different nationalities behave exactly alike

C. differences between people will always continue to exist and the world will be a dull place

D. differences between people will not exist as one hopes

When Nancy Lulbin received $5,000 from her grandfather in 1996, she never once considered taking a vacation or paying off student loans. Instead, the 24-year-old New York University law student began thinking about helping low-income women get better jobs. "If a woman goes for a job interview poorly dressed, she won't get the job," Lublin says. "But without a job, she can't afford suitable clothes."

So, with the money Lublin founded "Dress for Success" and began collecting women's clothes which were still in good condition but which their owners no longer needed. "So many women have clothes lying around that they will never wear again," one of Lublin's assistants says. "Nancy's idea is so simple and yet so important to women."

Many women come to Lublin's office before going to a job interview. Here, they receive a suit, shoes and any other things they need. Since it was set up, more than 1,000 women have turned to "Dress for Success" for help. Many of them have won jobs. Some have found jobs after being out of work for many years. A person, like a commodity(商品), needs packaging(包装). But going too far is absolutely undesirable(不合需要的). A little exaggeration(夸大), however, does no harm when it shows the person's unique qualities to their advantages. To show personal attractiveness in a casual and natural way, it is important for one to have a clear knowledge of oneself. A skilled packager knows how to add art to nature without any signs of embellishment(装饰), so that the person so packaged is not a commodity but a human being, lively and lovely.

A young person, especially a female, shining with beauty and full of life, has all the favor granted by God. Any attempt to make up would be self-defeating. Youth, however, comes and goes in a flash. Packaging for the middle-aged is primarily to hide the marks made by years. If you still enjoy life enough to keep self-confidence and work at pioneering work, you are unique in your natural qualities, and your attractiveness and grace will remain. Elderly people are beautiful if their river of life has been, through plains, mountains and jungles, running its course as it should. You have really lived your life , which now arrives at a self-satisfied stage of quietness and calmness with no interest in fame or wealth. There is no need to make use of hair dyeing. The snowcapped mountain is itself a beautiful scene of fairyland. Let your looks change from young to old in step with the natural ageing process so as to keep in harmony(和谐) with nature, for harmony itself is beauty, while the other way round will only end in unpleasantness. To be in the company of the elderly is like reading a thick book of deluxe(better quality) edition, which attracts one so much that one is unwilling to part with it.

As long as one finds where one stands, one knows how to package oneself, just as a commodity sets up its brand by the right packaging.

72. It can be concluded from the text that ______.

A. people should be packaged at all ages B. people should be packaged in a special way

C. elderly people also care about packaging D. proper packaging makes people attractive

73. According to the author, if you want to keep in harmony with nature, you should ______.

A. dye your hair B. make up at a young age

C. follow the aging process D. give up fame and wealth

74. For the middle-aged, attractiveness _______.

C. comes from the inside D. comes from the appearance

75. The underlined sentence means that elderly people _____.

A. are usually packaged like a finely-made book

B. experience a lot and have rich knowledge

C. do a lot of traveling and can give you much information

D. enjoy reading thick books of beautiful nature and fairyland

第一节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)

Many people say "yes" much more gladly than "no".

A friend is moving house this weekend and would like some help, and you agree. But you really want a couple of quiet days to relax at home. Or a roommate spent the whole weekend playing video games and wants to borrow your homework for "reference". But you've just finished it after a whole day's hard work.

Many people say "yes" to these kinds of requests. They often don't consider their own interests and feelings, and are often angry with themselves afterwards. Saying "no" requires courage and considerable practice. "Everyone wants to be liked," says Gabriele Steinki, a German psychologist. "Saying 'no' risks losing the affection(友爱) of the person asking the favor or even a job." The result is that many people say "yes" just for keeping the peace. But experts say this is regrettable. Everyone should have the right to say "no".

In fact, rejecting a request can even help to stabilize(稳定)a relationship because it expresses real affection. But, for people accustomed to agreeing every request, .

Most people believe that if I say "no", I'll lose the affection of the person. But the affection is important to me. This way of thinking can be replaced by this: if he only likes me because I always do what suits him, then the price of this affection is too high in the long term.

When saying "no", Steinki advises giving the reasons calmly again until the person gets the message.
