Research on the human brain has been attracting more and more scientists in recent years, just like the booming(昌盛的) hi-tech industry. One of the latest research topics is how to change the human brain or combine the computer and the human brain, i.e, to transplant a chip(芯片) into human brain. This innovation(改革) may make everyone's dream come true. If we compare a human brain to a hard disc, what the scientists are doing is to enlarge the applicable(可应用的) capacity(容量) of the hard disc. For the time being, there are some difficulties in such transplant experiments, but scientists never give up.

Experiments were started on animals. In 1996,a transplant experiment performed at the Defense and Military physiology Research Institute in the U.S. turned a bear into a dolphin.

The dolphin was named Ted, and the bear was named Tallin. Using the most advanced technology, deep and detailed studies were made of the swimming action memory area in Ted's brain by the scientists. They obtained a series of useful information, the signals transferred(转移) by the nerve system. Such information was saved into a button-sized chip, which was then transplanted into the action memory area in Tallin's brain. The information saved on the chip was released by means of electric power.

Recently, another comprehensive memory transplant was performed at the Motor Nerve Research Institute of the University of California. The comprehensive memory transplanted in the experiment included actions, moods, logic, words, images, etc. The experiment involved an entire transplant of the memory area. This was the largest such experiment done so far.

The transplant was performed from a dog named "Genius" to a dog named "Idiot". "Genius" could understand and follow up to 100 gestures and orders made by its master. It was a real genius in memorizing. "Idiot" was the younger brother of "Genius". It had no contact with people at all since its birth. It became an animal with nothing in its brain, without any memory.

The operation was a complete success. When the two dogs woke up, "Idiot "had grasped all the abilities "Genius" possessed; it was good at memorizing, sensible. It could follow every gesture and order given by its master. But "Genius" gave no response to its master, and in fact did not recognize him at all.

60. The purpose of the experiment is __________.

A. to combine the computer and the human brain

B. to make bear swim

C. to make some stupid dogs turn clever

D. to enlarge the applicable capacity of human brain

61. Which of the following statements is true? __________.

A. The scientists transferred a button-sized chip with useful information in Tallin's brain

B. The comprehensive memory transplant was performed at the Motor Nerve Research University

C. The second experiment wasn't an entire transplant of the memory area

D. The idiot was an animal with memory before brain experiment

62. What does the underlined word "success" refer to? __________.

A. The two dogs woke up B. They were both good at memorizing

C. The Idiot grasped all the abilities D. The Genius grasped all the abilities

63. According to the text, we can infer__________.

A. a person can know more after the experiment

B. a bear can swim after being transferred a chip with relevant useful information

C. a dog can become clever after entire transplant of the memory area

D. it is really good for animals to have transplant experiment

In a recently published book, I came across some exercises with interesting names such as fishbone diagrams, lotus flowers and clustering. As I used these exercises in my classes, I noticed that students were interested. They said more and wrote more. They enjoyed expressing their ideas and sharing them in groups. They were no longer passively waiting for the bell , but activelytaking part in the lesson. I find that creativity can act as a way to increase participation and improve fluency.

Creativity has become a popular word in recent years. Scholars in arts, psychology, business, education and science are all working to get a deeper understanding of it. Robert J. Stemberg is a creativity specialist and Yale professor of psychology. He defines creativity as "the ability to produce work that is both new (original) and appropriate(applicable to the situation ) ". this definition is useful, as we want our students to use language in a new way and to use it correctly and properly. Mot scholars say there are two types of creativity: big "C" creativity and small "c" creativity. Big "C" creativity refers to genius level thinking that results in artistic masterpieces and scientific breakthroughs. Small "c" creativity refers to everyday level thinking that can be used in any situation our emphasis is on the latter. While it goes without saying that any of our students could go on to be the next Picasso or Edison, our aim is to help students produce more ideas and use language in a new way.

68. The underlined words "waiting for the bell " in the first paragraph probably means______.

A. longing for a phone call B. hoping to have a bell

C. expecting the end of the class D. waiting to speak in the class

69. It can be inferred from the passage that the author thinks the exercises in the book were _____.

A. popular B. useful C. scientific D. creative

70. When you use a familiar word in a new way, you are ________.

A creative in the sense of big "C" creativity.

B. creative in the sense of small "c" creativity..

C. not creative in the sense of big "C" creativity..

D. not creative in the sense of small "c" creativity.

71. The main purpose of the passage is to _________.

A. show how useful the book is.

B, explain what creativity

C. discuss how one can be creative

D. tell what reaching aims at

Writers from China and the UK are turning a train journey into a piece of literature as they travel across the country, writing about the things they see. Zhang Mei, Ye Yanbin, Chen Danyan and Zhang Zhe from China and Toby Litt, Romesh Gunesekera, Sinead Morrissey and Susan Elderkin from the UK, started their journey on November 5 in Shanghai.

They will visit Beijing, Chongqing, Kunming and Guangzhou before ending up in Hong Kong on November 20. The project is being run by the British Embassy(使馆) and the Chinese Writers Association(作协) to encourage people to learn more about literature.

In each day, the writers run workshops and perform readings. They also keep an "e-diary" of their thoughts about the places they visit. It can be found at www.thinkuk.org.cn/wt.

The British writers, who thought China was full of dull streets and cyclists, are greatly impressed by how the country has developed. "The enormous structures(高层建筑)with strange lights are as exciting as Hong Kong when the sun goes down. I want to stay here longer, to look for more, to find more. I'd like to discover more unexpected pleasures," wrote Romesh Gunesekera after visiting Shanghai.

The website also has a "Literary Gallery" with detailed introductions to modern Chinese literature and British writing. It aims to " provide an opportunity for young Chinese people to experience English literature and create a new method of cultural exchange.

Many students are following the writers' journey on the Internet and leave messages in the interactive(交互式的) forum(论坛). "I would go with you if I had the time. I follow you online. Your diaries have given me a lot of encouragement and I hope to be a writer in the future," wrote a student called Qin Lang.

观点一

Nowadays, there are opposite opinions on English learning throughout our country. Some think it's a waste of time and money to learn English but I think differently.

First, ours is still a developing country. We need to learn the advanced technologies from foreign countries. Second, it will much easier for us to communicate with foreign friends if we can speak English freely. And what's more, we can understand western cultures better. In addition,....

So I strongly feel that we should strengthen English learning at schools and try our best to improve our English in order to catch up with advanced countries and make our country richer and stronger.

观点二

Nowadays, there are opposite opinions on English learning throughout our country. Some think we should strengthen it because it's so useful but I think differently.

We students spend at least three hours studying English every day. Just for listening, we have to buy tapes, recorders, walkmans or even CD-players, which has wasted us a lot of time and money. What's more, the schools spend too much in helping English teaching. But what's the use of our learning English? For most of us, we are just doing it for all kinds of exams. Besides,....

So I strongly feel that we shouldn't spend so much time and money in learning English.
