Despite racking up gains against the euro, the U.S. dollar continues to lose ground against currencies exposed to China's resurgent economy.

While the dollar has gained 12% against the euro since late November, across much of Asia the dollar has taken a hit. This year, it is down roughly 4% against the Indian rupee, the Indonesian rupiah and the Korean won, and 3% against the Thai baht. It has fallen 6% versus the Malaysian ringgit, the biggest slide in Asia, thanks to Malaysia's interest-rate hike in March, which increased demand for the Asian currency from foreign investors.

The new Taiwan dollar hit a new 19-month high Wednesday, trading at 31.56 per one U.S. dollar, which is about 1.3% weaker against the Taiwan currency so far this year.

The dollar's weakness is evident in Canada and Australia, commodity-rich economies that benefit from China's demand for raw materials. The U.S. dollar reached parity with the Canadian 'loonie' Tuesday for the first time since June 2008 and traded at C$1.0035 Wednesday in New York.

The strength of these currencies underscores how even as the U.S. economy returns to health and interest rates rise, Asia, led by China, remains at the front of the economic pack.

A new dynamic that could continue Asia's currency strength: the mini détente between the U.S. and China. The U.S. agreed Saturday to delay a report that could have deemed China a 'currency manipulator.'

The cooling down of tensions has raised expectations that China might now be more willing now to allow the yuan to get stronger. That would open the door even wider for China's Asian competitors to let their currencies strengthen against the dollar without fear of hurting exporters.
