basketball is the only major sport played in the United States that is totally American in origin.Every other sport evolved or was basically copied from a game played in another country.

the game of basketball was inventd by James Naismith on December 1,1891.As an instructor at r YMCA Trainning School, now Springfield College, in Springfiled, Massachusetts, Naismith responded to his students'complaints about the boring gymnasium classes, which consisted of marching and calisthenics. After some trial and error, he devised a game with two closed -bot-tomed peach baskets and a soccer ball.

To say that the game's popularity spread rapidly would be an understatement. During the Christmas break that December, word quickly spread of Naismith's new game, and by the next month he hurried printed rules in the campus nwespaper.

In a short time, the basic principles of basketball were established, including the use of closed-bottom nets instead of baskets by 1893. However, surprisingly, no one figured out until 1912 that using bottomless nets would greatly increase the game's speed. Nevertheless, despite this shortcoming, the only sport truly American had already become widely established.
