my dear teacher,ladies and gentlemen!,

good evening! Tonight I feel more than glorious to stand here and deliver my speech..

About a decade ago, genetic engineering seemed a quite strange name to most people in our society. Though it had developed to a large extent at that time, we felt we benefited little from it and thus cast little attention to it.

However, now the words "genetic engineering" has become well known to us all. Even a dustman who has got little education will feel familiar with the words though he has not the faintest idea about it.

From the time Mendel(孟德尔),the father of modern genetics discovered the law of segregation(分离定律) and the law of independent assortment(自由组合定律), to the time dolly, the first cloned sheep came into being, to now we can practice the technology of genetic engineering to improve the quality of some plant species, develop new drugs that fits exactly to the patients' genes to better cure their diseases, even to implement it to the military area to better secure our nation, we have indeed made a great stride! What a broad range of peerless advantages the genetic engineering enjoys! We may cheer with great excitement!

However, some of us may feel a sense of uneasiness. it seems too early for us to feel overjoyed about the genetic engineering. In fact, no one can deny the great potential benefits of this technology, but however great the technology is, when it falls into the hands of man, it may also become a brutal killer. Many originally well-intentioned inventions, after being invented, may become great devils while they still serve human beings tremendously. When Albert Einstein worked out the first atomic bomb, he felt a great sense of achievement, and a picture of peace safeguarded by his invention was seemingly unfolding in front of him. However, when he witnessed the two atomic bombs was dropped to two big cities in Japan, his proud smile faded in a flash. A great feeling of agony tightened his heart since then until he went to heaven. I suppose even before he was going to close his eyes forever, he was still dreaming of the extinction of war and an eternal peace of mankind. Now the peace of our world is established on the base of nuclear weapons and other massivedestructive weapons. Once the tie between nations breaks and one atomic bomb is used again, I am afraid the whole world will become trashes in a few seconds. We own peace because of the nuclear weapons, but we may also die out because of it.

While the example of atomic bomb is a famously typical one, there are still a lot of others in which well-intentioned inventions are misused in an evil way. So it is normal for us to feel concerned about the genetic engineering. The greater prospect it shows us, the more potential dangers it may bury. Once it is mastered in a vicious hand and its dangers burst out, it might be fatally devastating. Even our millions-of -year-developed civilization will disappear in no time. We may deeply feel how difficult it is for us to get where we are, and how easy it is for us to lose what we already have! In this highly-developing society, while we feel greatly secured, meantime we feel more severe threats.

Hence how can we reduce even avoid the possibility of the prospective tragedy? To my mind, while we are sparing no efforts to highlight the development of technology, we should put great emphasis on the moral qualities of our scientists and those who have the chance to master technology. The thought of scientists is the driving force for them to direct the usage of their knowledge. Therefore, I think, the peace of the world and society is not built on the base of technology, but rest on the sense and awareness of human responsibility of our scientists.

Finally, I want to extend a great wish to our world and society. I wish our technology could go on the right track and serve us forever!

Thank you very much for your attention!
