a small step in the blog, a giant progress for the English corner

written by 赖小琪

Today, with the guidance of my good friend, I finally manage to establish the blog for our English corner! My thrill is beyond any delicate word. As the host of the English corner, I just want to write this article to memorialize this very prime moment!

With time flying by, I have administrated this English corner for almost one year. Even its name, Xiaoqi English corner, contains my name, Xiaoqi. All of a sudden, I cannot help recalling the whole process in which our English corner has developed and evolved. Last year, in about April, I wrote a letter to our principal about my criticalviewpoint towards the current English corner initiated by the English Association of our school, that is, every time students at that English corner just simply gather around and have free talk without any permanent topic or theme. They ask the same questions and give the same answer repeatedly each time, like what is your name, how old are you, what is your major, etc. Needless to say, we need free chat to practice our oral English, but more significantly, we need some given topics so as to practice our oral English, our wording as well as our logical and innovative thinking. Through this way, we can touch various areas and fields about life, enlarge our vocabulary and cultivate our speaking and debating capability! Otherwise, if we merely chat about something that is very simple and personal, like major, age, interest and so on, we can never master a language perfectly. Once we come across some unfamiliar topics with native speakers, we may fall into a mute awkwardness.

Therefore, I summoned up great courage to plead with our principal for a classroom to carry out my plan. Through numerous ups and downs, twists and turns, with the supportive aid of one manager of the English corner as well as my good friend, 方竹静, I successfully set up our present English corner, which is featured with a leading host, specific topics and colorful activities that can involve all the participants into the thrilling procedure of learning English!

I have been the host of the English corner all the way. Definitely, I am dedicated myself to it with all my strength. I am pondering how to better reform the English corner so that I can reach a larger group of audience and better elevate our kindly participants' oral English which has tormented them for a long time. That is exactly my initial purpose of launching the corner. Through our constant joint efforts, we have succeeded to reach a vast amount of students and some people working outside our campus. Now our English corner enjoys increasing popularity all over the campus. In the future, I believe it will open its arms to a more promising prospect!

This semester might be the last term when I am still shouldering the role of host. Next semester, I may pass this headship on to a responsible and capable student. Being the host of the English corner, one can really benefit enormously in the improvement of oral English, managerial skills and the networking of friends. On the one hand, you will feel proud of yourself when instructing and guiding others to move on; on the other hand, you will feel extremely tiny and the eager to learn when encountering some much more powerful and capable people. The position of the host also enables you to have the courage to speak in the public and cherish your ability of instant reaction towards some emergencies. Altogether, it will benefit you more than you can imagination!

Now I have about 22 managers for the corner, all of whom show great passion towards English and enthusiasm to serve our students. Now the corner is also embracing its stout and big reform. In order to help the BEC candidates get familiar with the testing content of the oral part and further practice it, in the last one hour, we will assemble all the candidates to practice BEC English together strictly following the procedure of the real testing pattern. I will also be the leading host to guide all the participants, giving them my pertinent and beneficial suggestion. I am of great honor to have passed the BEC Vantage and BEC Higher last year with a final score B. Hence I am extremely familiar with this exam! So I firmly believe I can give what you need to you to successfully pass the exam!

Finally, I want to convey my wholehearted wishes to our English corner and all the present and perspective participants! May our English corner develop better and better! May we progress farther and farther! Thank you!
