Maslow's Hierarchy of "Needs" Theory

Abraham Maslow is a renownedpsychologist for his fundamental and universal literature called "self-actualization" or "hierarchy of needs theory". The heart of the theory is that human satisfy their needs from a level (basic needs like oxygen, food, water, shelter) to the other (social needs, love and affection needs) up to the self-actualisation needs and the fulfilment of one

level is the prerequisite before you can even plan for the next.



美国人本主义心理学家马斯洛认为人有五种基本需要：生理需要、安全需要、归属和爱的需要、尊重需要、自我实现需要。后来又在尊重需要和自我实现需要之间增加了认知需要和审美需要。这些需要属于不同层次，构成一个需要的"金字塔"。马斯洛指出，只有低级需要基本满足之后，才会出现高一级的需要，也就是说，人的基本需要是由低级向高级发展的，具有连续性。但同时马斯洛也承认，也会有一些例外和颠倒的情况，表现出跳跃性。例如，有的人尽管缺衣少食，但仍为了自己的理想而奋斗。下面我们来看看五种基本需要：

1、生理需要

这是直接与生存有关的需要。它具有自我保存和种族延续的意义，在人类各种基本需要中占有最强的优势。它包括对食物、水、排泄、睡眠、性等的需要，其中尤以对食物和水的需要最重要。正如马斯洛所说："对于一个饥饿程度以达危险程度的人，除了食物，其他任何兴趣都不存在。它梦里是食物，记忆里是食物，思想活动的中心是食物，感情的对象是食物。"

2、安全需要

如果生理需要相对满足了，就会出现安全需要。这是--种对安全、稳定、依赖、秩序、法律、免受惊吓等的需要。处于这一需要的人，首先要求减低生活中的不确定性，如儿童需要各种生活常规，否则就会表现出焦虑c

3、归属和爱的需要

生理需要和安全需要基本满足之后，归属和爱的需要就会产生。归属需要就是参加和依附于一定组织的需要。爱的需要包括给予爱和接受爱。归属和爱的需要如果得不到满足，个人就会感到孤独和空虚。"他空前强烈地感到缺乏朋友，心爱的人，妻子或孩子。也就是说，通常他会渴望与人们有一种充满深情的关系，渴望在他的团体和家庭中有一个位置。"马斯洛还发现，缺乏爱就会抑制成长和潜力的发展，会导致心理失调和适应不良。"爱的饥饿是一种缺乏症，就像缺乏盐或缺少维生素一样。"

4、尊重需要

尊重的需要包括两个方面：自尊和他人对自己的尊重。这种需要的满足会使人建立自信，使人觉得自己在这个世界上是有价值的、有能力的、有力量的。如果得不到满足，就会导致自卑感、无助'感和失落感。

5、自我实现的需要

上述几种需要得到合理满足后，自我实现的需要就出现了。这种需要是一种创造、发挥个人潜能、实现自我理想、实现个人价值的需要。马斯洛指出，音乐家必须作曲，画家必须绘画，诗人必须写诗，人必须成为他能够成为的人，这种需要就是自我实现。真正能自我实现的人是很少的

Maslow's "Hierarchy of Human Needs" has been widely used in many fields in China such as pedagogy, psychology, and management etc since 1978. According to his long-term investigation, Maslow practically and realistically brought forward his "Hierarchy of Human Needs", and considered this as the base of human motivation research. During the quotative courses, several theories was put forward such as four-level hierarchys, five level hierarchys, and six level hierarchys, and different explainations for Maslow's "Self-actualized View" was also produced. Along with the widely introducation and citation of this theory, different contents and comprehension were complemented. Although different annotations for Maslow's theory present, the content what he expressed is unique. Therefore, it's necessary to understand the primary content and description of Maslow's "Hierarchy of Human Needs" and "Self-actualized View". Only if we properly understand the actual content and historical background of this theory, we can comprehensively explain it or put forward suggestions.
