年前,让浙江一对夫妻险些离婚的原因是,66岁的丈夫因劳累没有在半夜叫醒妻子,耽误了她在网上游戏"开心农场"里收庄稼。这款令人上瘾的社交游戏由其最早的平台人人网(Renren.com)在周二关闭,理由是"战略调整和资金等各方面原因"。《人民日报》说,自从2008年以来,该游戏吸引了上亿中国用户。


Four years ago, a couple in Zhejiang province almost divorced because a 66-year-old man was too tired to wake up his wife at midnight so she could harvest her crops for an online game called 'Happy Farm.'


关闭"开心农场"一事在新浪公司(Sina Corp.)旗下类似推特(Twitter)的服务微博上引来50余万条帖子,网友纷纷对该游戏中的"偷菜"表示怀念,这个名词已深深印刻在中国这一代网民的记忆中。




"开心农场"游戏本身的寿命比其开发商、上海初创企业"五分钟"要长。后者在2009年将运营该游戏的主要权利卖给了腾讯控股有限公司(Tencent Holdings Ltd.)。"五分钟"曾被视为社交游戏开发先锋,或许能成为中国版的Zynga。但就在Zynga去年底推出《农场小镇2》(FarmVille 2)前后,"五分钟"解雇了大部分员工。虽然该公司从未宣布倒闭,但现在看不到其网站,公司也未宣布开发了任何新项目。


The addictive social game, which the People's Daily said has attracted more than 100 million Chinese users since 2008, was shut by its earliest platform Renren.com on Tuesday due to ' strategyadjustment and costs.'


"开心农场"与Zynga的"农场小镇"类似,用户可在虚拟农场里种草莓、胡萝卜和西红柿等果蔬,其中每样果蔬都有一定的"成熟"期,价值一定的"钱币"。例如,茄子要16个小时才能成熟,价值500枚钱币。由于成熟期各不相同,从5岁小男孩到65岁老奶奶等各路玩家均设定闹钟,全天候等着收庄稼,或从那些太大意没有醒来看护自己农场的朋友那里偷菜。




很多"开心农场"用户都是百无聊赖的公司白领,没有经营真正农场的经历,但这并不影响他们玩游戏的热情。身为"农场主",他们要花实实在在的人民币为虚拟的西红柿买化肥,或养一只狗看家护院,养狗可提防偷菜的人,这些人是通过社交媒体平台与"农场主"有联系的家人、朋友或同事。


The death of the game resulted in more than 500,000 posts on Weibo, Sina Corp.'s popular Twitter-like microblogging service, as users waxed nostalgic over 'stealing crops,' a tactic of the game that became ingrained in the memory of the Chinese Internet generation.


就连中国国家电视台中央电视台也参与了"追忆"活动。它通过新浪官方微博账户说:你一定记得,有人半夜偷菜和家人吵架,有人上班偷菜被开除......"偷菜"终成回忆。那些废寝忘食"偷菜"的日子,你怀念吗?




虽然许多微博用户说自己已不再玩"开心农场",但仍为它的消亡感到难过,因为他们曾经每天花费好几个小时照料那些作物。


The game itself outlived its inventor, Five Minutes, a Shanghai-based startup that sold the prime right to run the game to Tencent Holdings Ltd. in 2009. The company was seen as a social gaming vanguard--a potential Chinese Zynga. But around the same time that Zynga launched 'FarmVille 2' late last year, Five Minutes fired most of its employees. Though the company has never announced its closure, its website is now unavailable and it hasn't announced any new projects

'Happy Farm,' similar to Zynga's 'FarmVille,' lets users grow crops such as strawberries, carrots and tomatoes on virtual farms. Each crop takes a certain period of time to 'mature' and is worth a set number of 'coins.' For example, eggplants take 16 hours to mature and are worth 500 coins. This variedmaturity left gamers--from 5-year-old boys to 65-year-old grandmas--setting their alarm clocks for all hours to harvest their crops, or steal from others who were too careless to wake up and guard their own farms.

Many of 'Happy Farm's' users were white-collar workers bored in their offices, with little experience on real farms. But that didn't dampen their passion for paying real renminbi to buy chemical fertilizers for virtual tomatoes or keep a guard dog in the game, sniffing and watching out for vegetable thieves--family, friends or colleagues connected to the gamer through social-media platforms.

Even state broadcaster China Central Television got in on the reminiscing. 'You must remember those people who quarreled with their family, those who were fired for stealing crops while in the office,' it said through its official Weibo account. ''Stealing crops' has become a memory. Do you miss those days you forgot sleep or skipped meals to steal crops?'


人人网这个平台的衰落也推动了开心农场的毁灭,人人网难以扩大用户群体及提高收入。人人公司(Renren Inc.)公布今年第二季度亏损930万美元。


While many Weibo users said they don't play 'Happy Farm' anymore, they said they feel sad about its demise nonetheless, as they used to spend hours per day on the crops.


人人首席执行长陈一舟上周说,营收增长减缓主要是由于游戏产品推出延迟。他说,虽然我们面临短期的货币化挑战,但我们正按部就班地实施今年的战略重点,以确立我们在中国竞争激烈的移动网络领域的地位。

Others saw the game as a marker of their lives four years ago. 'My boyfriend used to steal all the crops for me, but now we are not together anymore,' one user said.




'You stole other people's crops, and the time steals our youth,' said a user on Renren.com.




The social game was first released on renren.com, the Facebook-like real-name social media platform, in late 2008. It was later launched on other platforms, including Tencent's QQ Space in 2009. Tencent, the Chinese Internet giant with a user base of more than 200 million, boosted the user numbers of 'Happy Farm' but changed its name on its platform to QQ Farm.




QQ Farm is still in operation and maintains a stable base of active users, Tencent said Wednesday.




Though many users have switched from virtual farming to other games, Tencent's online gaming business hasn't declined. 'League of Legends,' a role-playing fantasy game Tencent acquired from a U.S. developer, surpassed 'World of Warcraft' as the most popular PC game world-wide in 2011. The technology giant's most recent hit was a mobile game called 'Classic Flights Battle' a shooting game on its WeChat platform. The simple but addictive game sent a female user in Hangzhou to the hospital for tenosynovitis--her thumbs suffered from the high frequency of shooting the flights.




The decline of the platform renren.com also contributed to Happy Farm's death as it struggled to expand its user base and boost revenue. Renren Inc. posted a loss of $9.3 million in the second quarter.




'Revenue growth slowed down primarily due to delays in our game pipeline, ' Renren Chief Executive Joseph Chen said last week. 'Although we face short-term monetization challenges, we are on track in executing our strategic priorities for the year aimed at securing our position in the highly competitive mobile internet sector in China.'
