John: Hello there, this is Real English from BBC Learning English, I'm John.

Feifei: And I'm Feifei.

John: The English language is changing all the time, and Real English is your chance to hear the most up-to-date words and phrases that you probably won't find in your dictionary.

Feifei: 今天我们要学习的词是 lippy,如果你对一个人总是很 lippy 的话,意思就是说你这个人总是顶嘴。Lippy 爱顶嘴的, 出言不逊的。

John: If you talk back to a teacher, or if you are rude to them, then you might be accused to being lippy. The word derives from the lips where you form your words.

Feifei: John, have you been lippy to anyone?

John: I think I used to be quite lippy when I was at school. I was always saying things back to the teacher when I wasn't supposed to.

Feifei: But you're not too lippy these days?

John: Well, I can't afford to be lippy with my boss at work, I might lose my job!

Feifei: 原来 John 是怕被炒鱿鱼呀!我们来听听下面的对话是怎么说的。

Insert

A: I've already told you not to be rude.

B: Yeah yeah, you're not so polite yourself!

A: You're really lippy!

B: Me? lippy? No, you are!

Feifei: 上面我们听到的就是一个非常典型的和上级顶嘴的对话。Lippy 爱顶嘴的。John, being lippy could get you into lots of trouble, couldn't it?

John: Yes, I guess it could. If you're too lippy you never know what might happen! Well, that's all for today. You've been listening to Real English from BBC Learning English. Look out for more Real English on our website www.bbcchina.com.cn.
