Neil: You're listening to Real English from BBC Learning English. I'm Neil.

Neil: Today's phrase is 'booze cruise'.

Helen: 'Booze'

Neil: Yes, 'booze', is a slang word for alcohol. Usually a cruise is a long journey on a boat. But in this expression, it can mean travelling on a boat, or by car.

Helen:

Neil: In this expression, British people are usually talking about travelling to France or Belgium, but not on holiday. They go especially to shop for booze!

Neil: Well in France and Belgium the taxes on alcohol and cigarettes are lower, so it can be cheaper to buy them there than in Britain.

Neil: Often people go on a booze cruise for a day-trip, either by boat, or by going on the Channel Tunnel.

Helen: A day trip

Example

A: Have you bought all the booze for the wedding yet?

B: Yes, we went over to France on a booze cruise and bought loads of cheap wine.

Neil: Booze cruise.

Neil: We've run out of time now. Join us soon for more Real English. Goodbye.

Helen:
