YY: Wow, Xin Tao, this calligraphy classroom is really beautiful.
XT: You can look around at the work of art on the wall, they are all excellent pieces.
YY: Xin Tao, this piece of calligraphy, "make lofty aspirations, realize it by taking the first step" is just outstanding.
XT: That piece was produced by a seniorschoolmate with ten years of experience in calligraphy.
YY: I whole-heartedly admire those who can produce beautiful calligraphy.
XT: Don't just admire them! You don't even know how to hold a brush. It would be better if you started learning soundly, right from scratch, right away!
YY: How do I hold it?
XT: The proper hand posture to hold a brush requires that an egg can be stuffed into the space in your palm.
YY: Like this? My hand isn't as nimble if I hold it this way.
XT: You'll get this feeling when you're just starting out. It will be fine when you get used to it. Chinese calligraphy is comprised of three aspects i.e. writing technique, manner of writing [as in movement of the brush, etc], and writing style [more to do with the spiritual aspect, 精神.] Writing technique requires skillful use of the brush and mastering of the correct techniques involving the fingers, wrist, body, etc.
YY: These theories sound so difficult. Perhaps it would be better if you teach me something more practical.
XT: I am experienced in this, so if you want to learn how to write beautiful calligraphy, you've got to listen to my advice. I'll teach you one more trick. In calligraphy, you must pay attention to your strokes. If you perfect your strokes, then your characters will be aesthetically pleasing [lit. your characters will not look ugly].
YY: In that case, I'll just follow this copybook [for calligraphy] and practice it stroke by stroke.
