卧薪尝胆
(Wòxīn-chángdǎn)  

      吴国和越国打仗，越国打败了，吴王夫差要捉拿越王勾践。越国的大臣范蠡建议越王假装投降，来保存性命再图复仇。夫差不听大臣伍子胥的劝告，留下了勾践。三年以后，勾践终于被释放回了越国。为了不忘记过去的耻辱，他每天晚上睡觉不用褥子，只铺一些稻草，还在屋里挂了一只苦胆，时不时尝尝苦胆的味道。最后，在他和人民的共同努力下，越国越来越强大，终于打败了吴国。

The State of Wu and the State of Yue were engaged in a war. Finally the Yue lost the battle and Fu Chai the King of Wu captured Gou Jian the King of Yue. Gou Jian followed his minister Fan Li's advice and pretended to surrender so to save his life and sought opportunity to revenge later. Fu Chai the King of Wu didn't listen to his minister Wu Zixu's proposal of killing Gou Jian instantly but kept Gou's life. Three years later, Gou Jian was set free and returned to the State of Yue. To constantly remind himself of the past humiliation, he slept on straws at night instead of on a mattress. He also had a gall bladder hung in the house, so that he could taste the bitterness of it now and then. With the joint efforts of him and his people, the State of Yue became stronger and stronger and defeated the Kingdom of Wu in the end.
