Yu Boya was a very famous musician during the Spring and Autumn Period. He was especially skilled at playing stringed-instruments. One night, he went sightseeing on a boat. In foreground of such beautiful scenery, he began to play his instrument. The sound became louder and louder. Suddenly, he heard someone applauding. Boya walked off the boat and saw a woodcutter standing by the bank. He invited the woodcutter to board the boat and continued to play for him with enthusiasm. When Boya played a melody for eulogizing mountains, the woodcutter said, "Great! It's as imposing as high mountains". Then Boya began to play a song representing running water. The woodcutter praised him again and again. When Boya finally finished, he happily said, "bosom friend! You are my bosom friend". The woodcutter was Zhong Ziqi. They became good friends from that moment on.
Later, Zhong Ziqi died of an illness. Boya was very sad when heard it. He came to Ziqi's grave and played an ancient tune "High Mountain and Running Water." He said with sadness, "My only bosom friend died. Who can I play music for now? " Then, he broke his beloved stringed-instrument and swore never to play again.
