西汉时期，西南方有一些小国家，其中最大的一个叫夜郎国。夜郎国王从来没有离开过自己的国家，以为自己统治的国家是天下最大的。
During the Western Han Dynasty, there were various small states to the southwest. One of the biggest states was called the state of Yelang. The King of Yelang, who had never left his own state, thought the state he ruled was the largest in the world.
有一次，夜郎国王带部下巡视国境。部下为迎合国王的心意，告诉国王，夜郎国面积是最大的，山是最高的，河是最长的。国王就更加相信夜郎是天下最大的国家了。
One day, the King made an inspection tour of the frontier with his subordinates. In order to please the King, the minister told the King that the area of Yelang was the largest, the mountain the highest and the river the longest. The King believed ever more strongly that Yelang was the largest state in the world.
汉朝的皇帝派使者去西南寻找通往印度的通道。使者先到了夜郎的邻国——滇国，滇王不了解汉朝，问使者："汉朝和我的国家相比，哪个更大？"使者觉得滇王很无知，竟然以为滇国能与汉朝相比。后来，使者来到了夜郎国。夜郎国王不知道自己统治的国家只和汉朝的一个县差不多大，竟然也问使者："汉朝和我的国家，哪个更大？"原来他以为汉朝像滇国一样，没有多大。
The emperor of the Han Dynasty sent an envoy to the southwest to look for a passage to India. The envoy first arrived in the state of Dian---the country bordering Yelang. The King of Dian didn't know much about the Han and asked the envoy, "Which is bigger, the Han kingdom and my state?" The envoy thought him ignorant that he would even think to compare himself with the Han Empire. Later, the envoy came to Yelang. The King of Yelang didn't know his state was only the size of a single county of Han, and so asked the envoy, "Which is bigger, the Han or my state?" He believed Han was as the size of Dian.
