Hollywood's first behemoth of 2013 landed with a giant thud.

'Jack the Giant Slayer' opened to $28 million in U.S. and Canada ticket sales, according to an estimate from distributor Warner Bros. That was a weak start for a movie that cost nearly $200 million to make.

The revisionist fable kicked off a month crowded with costly movies seeking global blockbuster status.

Hoping to follow in the footsteps of late-winter hits such as 'The Hunger Games,' Hollywood studios scheduled three other movies this month with budgets at well over $100 million each: 'Oz the Great and Powerful,' 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation,' and 'The Croods.'

由于希望追随《饥饿游戏》(The Hunger Games)等去年冬末大片的脚步,好莱坞电影公司计划本月上映《奥兹大法师》(Oz the Great and Powerful)、《特种部队2:复仇》(G.I.

In good news for those releases, 'Jack' turned out to be feeble competition. The opening was worse than that of last year's infamous flop 'John Carter,' and only slightly better than 'Battleship,' though both of those had even higher budgets.

The pint-size receipts for 'Jack' likely will mean big losses for Time Warner Inc.'s Warner and Legendary Pictures LLC, which paid for half the production costs.

Opening-day grosses Friday were so low that most people in Hollywood had expected 'Jack' to finish the weekend with less than $25 million. But in a sliver of good news, ticket sales jumped a higher-than-average 56% on Saturday, a sign of positive word-of-mouth.

Two other new films had unimpressive starts, though they cost far less. Relativity Media LLC's raunchy comedy, '21 and Over,' opened to $9 million at the box office. 'The Last Exorcism: Part II,' from CBS Corp.'s CBS Films, opened to $8 million. That was less than half the $20 million opening of its predecessor, a surprise horror hit in 2010.

2》(The Last Exorcism: Part II)

Meanwhile, 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,' from Warner and Metro-Goldwn-Mayer Inc., became the 15th movie ever to have grossed more than $1 billion world-wide. The last film to join that club was the James Bond sequel 'Skyfall,' which was released in November.
