Concerned about his job security and unable to find a new position, Martin Luther Simms IV recently decided to pursue an idea he had for an Internet business. But the venture he envisioned required certain talents he lacked.

Mr. Simms, a finance professional, says he didn't have any friends or relatives who could help out. He also couldn't afford to hire someone with the Web-design skills his start-up idea demanded. So the 23-year-old began searching LinkedIn.com for a potentialpartner and found Grant Miller.

Mr. Simms didn't know Mr. Miller, but the networking site showed that they graduated from the same university and both lived in Southern California. After chatting several times online, over the phone and eventually in person, the two men agreed to team up.

They're now getting ready to launch GoodDivot.com, an online coupon service for golf enthusiasts, next month.

现在他们准备让GoodDivot.com这个网站在下个月上线。

'We were both a little suspect of the idea of going into business together,' says Mr. Simms. 'But you got to take chances.'

For wannabe entrepreneurs with limited expertise, forming a partnership can be an ideal way to get a new business up and running fast. Finding a co-pilot who can fill the gap, however, can be tough.

The average person's network may include few, if any, folks who are interested, qualified and available to take on the job. And even the best of friends may not be cut out to work together. As a result, finding someone you can successfullypartner with on a start-up may require looking beyond your inner circle.

'When you're working with someone who's not part of your close network, you tend to be more objective about their talents and capabilities and you tend to look to at them much more strategically than a friend or family member,' says Nancy Koehn, a business professor and entrepreneurial historian at Harvard Business School. 'Those are huge advantages.'

Jason McGee did some digging prior to buying a home-care franchise last spring with Lane Miller, someone he had met less than six months prior. (Lane Miller isn't related to Grant Miller.) A mutual friend introduced the two men because Mr. Miller was searching for a job and the friend thought Mr. McGee might be able to help. They were soon working for the same health-care company, but didn't cross paths on the job. Eventually, Mr. McGee got laid off.

Mr. McGee says he then began thinking about starting a business and figured Mr. Miller might make for a good partner since by this point he knew they had complementary backgrounds
