Richard James Verone, of North Carolina, tried to rob a bank for just $1 so he could get free healthcare in jail.
Unemployed Verone, 59, has a chest growth and two ruptured disks, so he was hoping three years in prison would get him the healthcare he requires.
He handed a femaleworker at RBC Bank a note demanding the single dollar and claiming he had a gun.
Then he claims to have sat down on a chair in the bank and waited for the police to arrive.
Verone said: "I'm sort of a logical person and that was my logic. I need medical care."
However a charge of larceny, rather than armed robbery, will probably only keep him in jail for one year at the most.
He is scheduled to appear in court next Tuesday.
