China's overall vehicle market has been a 'disappointment' this year thanks to a drop in sales of micro-minivans and heavier trucks, but demand for passenger cars in the country is likely to grow firmly if moderately next year and beyond, said a senior Volkswagen AG executive.

For the auto market as a whole, 'growth really has come to a normal level... and was not too impressive,' Karl-Thomas Neumann, chief executive of Volkswagen Group China, told a small group of reporters Monday. Various forecasts say overall auto sales in China are expected to increase about 3% this year to about 19 million vehicles, including passenger cars as well as other types.


大众汽车集团(中国)总裁兼首席执行长倪凯铭(Karl-Thomas Neumann)周一告诉记者,就整体车市而言,增速实际已经达到了正常水平,表现并不是很抢眼。多种预测宣称,今年中国汽车整体销量预计将上升约3%,至1,900万辆,包括乘用车和其它类型车辆。



But Mr. Neumann said he is 'confident' that China's passenger-vehicle market will keep growing for the medium term, even though he doubts the market is going to be able to go back any time soon to the days when demand increased 30% or more a year a few years ago.


但倪凯铭说,他对中国乘用车市场在中期内保持增长充满信心,不过他对市场能否很快重现几年前年需求增速达30%或以上的情形持怀疑态度。



Mr. Neumann said the total passenger-vehicle market, including cars imported from outside China, has grown 9% so far this year. Next year, he said, the passenger-vehicle market is likely to expand about 8% to 10%, and it should be able to keep that growth pace on average 'for some years to come.'


倪凯铭说,今年以来到目前为止,包括从中国境外进口的汽车在内,整体乘用车市场销量上升了9%。他说,明年乘用车市场可能扩张8%至10%,未来几年该市场应该能够保持这一平均增速。



The Volkswagen executive declined to forecast sales next year for the German auto maker's various brands, which include Volkswagen and Skoda. In the first 10 months of 2011, Volkswagen Group brands sold about 1.9 million vehicles in China, up about 15% from a year earlier. Mr. Neumann said the group is likely to sell more than two million vehicles this year.


不过倪凯铭拒绝预测大众汽车旗下大众和斯柯达(Skoda)等品牌汽车明年的销量。2011年的头10个月,大众汽车集团旗下各品牌在中国售出了约190万辆汽车,同比增幅约为15%。倪凯铭说,集团今年在华销量可能突破200万辆。



The main source of his optimism comes from a comparatively low rate of car ownership in China, he said. In China, 72 people per 1,000 people currently own cars, he said, without citing his source. The 'car penetration' rate is unlikely any time soon to reach levels seen in the U.S. and Germany, where well more than 500 per 1,000 own cars. But 'we could go 200 or 300,' given that the rate in Beijing is already above 200, Mr. Neumann said.

'So there is so much growth potential, and people I meet and dealers I talk to tell me that one of the things that families want to invest in is their own family car,' Mr. Neumann said.
