Although Internet-related initial public offerings have enjoyed a far greater average first-day trading pop in the U.S. than their non web-oriented peers in 2011, over the course of the year they ended up with the exact same declines, according to data provider Dealogic.

The average first-day gain for Internet-related IPOs so far in 2011 is 28%, compared to 7% for non-Internet IPOs.

After the buzz of a first-day pop, however, Internet-related IPOs are in the same boat as other deals over the longer term, suggesting that flipping the stocks quickly may not be such a bad strategy if investors want to lock in gains.

That larger first day gains for Internet deals include the year's best performer, Chinese firm Qihoo 360 Technology Co. Ltd., which rose 135% during its debut in March. Professional networking site LinkedIn Corp., which had the second-best pop, generated a gain of 109% in May.

Groupon Inc., by comparison, rose 30.6% on its first day last week--not a shabbyperformance given the current state of the market, but nowhere near the triple-digit percentages made by hotter deals earlier in the year.

Although some of the original Internet studs remain above their IPO prices--Qihoo opened Wednesday at $17.89, 23% above its $14.50 IPO price, and LinkedIn was at $77.23, 72% above its $45 IPO price--they have given back some of their first-day gains.

Other dot-com deals have fared worse, dragging the group's average year-to-date performance to regular IPO levels. Chinese social media site Renren Inc., which popped 29% on its debut in May, opened Wednesday at $5.12, 63% below its $14 IPO price. Internet radio site Pandora Media Inc., which rose 9% in June, opened at $15.30, down 4% from its IPO price of $16.

Right now, there are two Internet-related IPOs planning to launch before Thanksgiving: consumerreview site Angie's List Inc., which wants to raise $114 million on the Nasdaq by listing as 'ANGI,' and Chinese social commerce site LaShou Group Inc., which is seeking $80 million on the Nasdaq as 'LASO.'

Outside of Internet-related offerings, some of the best non-web related IPO debuts this year were in consumer companies like tea shop chain Teavana Holdings Inc. , women's boutique Francesca's Holdings Corp., car sharing service Zipcar Inc. and coffee chain Dunkin' Brands Group Inc.

Although their first-day pops never approached the triple-digit percentage gains seen by the likes of Qihoo and LinkedIn--leader Teavana, for example, rose 63.5% when it went public in July--their initial performances were still considered strong.

Other non-Internet deals, however, have been hit harder, particularly in energy and alternativeenergy stocks. Two biofuel firms, Gevo Inc. and Solazyme Inc. opened Wednesday down 50% and 41%, respectively, from their IPO prices this year.
