Question 1:
W:If the weather tomorrow is as hot as today,we may as well give up the idea of playing tennis in the afternoon.
M:Oh. I don't think it'll last long. The weather forecast says it will cloud-over by mid-afternoon.
Question 2:
M:I need this document to be printed out right now. I will use it in the meeting.
W:OK. I will give you in a minute.
Question 3:
W:That't really a good idea, but do you think Jeff could help us plan the camping trip to the Blue Mountain?
M:Well, since he spends every summer there,he might know a thing or two about it.
Question 4:
W:How did your interview go?
M:I couldn't feel better about it!The questions were very fair, and I seemed to find an answer for all of them.
Question 5:
W:What do you want to know, young fellow?
M:May I ask when we will have our mid-term and final?
W:Of course.Your mid-term will be in the fifth week, and the final will be at the end of this quarter.
Question 6:
M:Have you finished your term paper? I handed it in last Thursday.
W:I finished typing it at five o'clock this morning.I have to hand it in by noon today.
Question 7:
W:Why are you so late? I've been waiting for more than a half hour.
M:My bicycle had a flat tire and I had to walk.
Question 8:
W:It's too bad that you missed the class today.Prof.Marks outlined the entire fifth chapter. He said most of the exam will come from that.
M:That means I'll have to do twice as much work for the exam.
Question 9:
M:What did you think of the final exam?
W:At the end of the first hour I was still on the first page. I could hardly finish the paper.
Question 10:
M:My paper is due in two days,so I must ask David to type it for me.
W:No way. Even Jim can't do it in such a short time.
Questions 11~13:
Scientists have learned a great deal about the kinds of food people need. They say that there are several kinds of food that people should eat every day. What are these classes of food? They are :1) green vegetables of all kinds, such as string beans, peas, lettuces and cabbages;2)fruits,such as apples, peaches and bananas;3) other vegetables, examples of these are beets, onions, carrots, tomatoes and so on;4) meat of all kinds, fish and eggs;5) milk and food made from milk, such as butter, cheese and icecream;6) bread or cereal. Rice is also in this class of food.
People in different countries and different areas of the world eat different kinds of things. Scientists say that none of these differences are really important. It doesn't matter whether food is eaten raw or cooked, canned or frozen. It doesn't matter if a person eats dinner at four o'clock in the afternoon or at eleven o'clock at night. The most important thing, they say,is that every day a person should eat something from each of these kinds of food. There are two problems, then,in feeding the ever-increasing number of people on earth. The first is to find some way to feed the world population so that no one is hungry. The second is to make sure that people everywhere have the right kinds of food to make them grow to be strong and healthy.
Questions 14~17:
W:Sir,you've been using the online catalogue for quite a while. Is there anything I can do to help you?
M:Well,I've got to write a paper about Hollywood in the 30s and 40s,and I'm really struggling. There are hundreds of books, and I just don't know where to begin.
W:Your topic sounds pretty big. Why don't you narrow it down to something like...uh... the history of the studios during that time?
M:You know,I was thinking about doing that, but more than 30 books came up when I typed in "movie studios".
W:You could cut that down even further by listing the specific years you want. Try adding "1930s" or "1940s" or maybe "Golden Age".
M:"Golden Age" is a good idea. Let me type that in. Hey,look, just 6 books this time. That's a lot better.
W:Oh,another thing you might consider. Have you tried looking for any magazines or newspaper articles?
M:No,I've only been searching for books.
W:Well, you can look up magazine articles in the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature.
M:Okay,I think I'll get started with these books and then I'll go over the magazines.
W:If you need any help,I'll be over at the Reference Desk.
M:Great,thanks a lot.
Questions 18~21:
W:Professor Weston,could I speak to you?
M:Yes,but only for a few minutes.I have a meeting at three o'clock.
W:I think this will be quick,I need permission to register for your advanced sketching course.
M:Have you taken the prerequisite, the beginning sketching course?
W:No,and that's just why I'm here. The catalog says that the instructor can give permission to register without the prerequisite.
M:That's correct.Have you had any previous experience?
W:I've brought lots of sketch books full of my work, but I had no formal training.
M:Can I have a look at some of your sketches?
W:Certainly, here are some examples, mostly flowers and landscapes.
M:They look pretty good, but I really don't have time to make a decision now,why don't you give them to me and I'll review them this evening.I'll let you know tomorrow.
W:Thanks a lot.I really appreciate it.
Questions 22~25:
W:What?You've sold nothing?
M:Well,you know,the market's in a slump.People in this area simply aren't buying things.
W:Then you should go other places,let's say,big cities,like Chicago,New York,San Francisco,and so on.
M:Yes,Miss.I'll start as early as possible.
W:Remember you should try your best to find new customers.
M:Yes,Miss,I will.
W:Listen, try to sell all the products.Don't come back until you've succeeded.
M:I understand,Miss.
W:Where are you going first?
M:How about Washington D.C.?
W:Good. Are you ready to leave now?
M:No,Miss.I came only yesterday evening.
W:Then you'd better go back and get ready to leave.By the way, which train are you going to take?
M:The 10:26 train.It's the earliest one to Washington D.C.
W:Now let me see. It's already 8:20.So you only have two hours to prepare for your trip.Get moving. You're wasting time.
M:I think I'd better go to the station to book a sleeping car first.
W:A sleeping car? That's right, and don't forget to take enough money with you.
M:Thank you,Miss.I won't come back to see you until I've succeeded.
