'The Green Hornet' topped the weekend box office, pulling in $34 million, according to early estimates from Hollywood.com.

The 3-D superhero film from Sony/Columbia stars Seth Rogen and was directed by Michel Gondry. The movie received mixed reviews from critics. ''The Green Hornet' may not be the end of movies as we know them, though the people who made this atrocity were certainly in there trying,' movie critic Joe Morgenstern wrote in the Wall Street Journal.

'The Dilemma' (Universal), a movie starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James that was panned by most critics, finished second with $17.4 million.

In third place was 'True Grit' (Paramount), an acclaimed Western drama with Jeff Bridges that is likely to be a major contender at the coming Oscars. The movie pulled in $11.2 million.

Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box-office division of Hollywood.com, said the 'Green Hornet's'' cast helped bring in audiences. ''The Green Hornet' proves that if properly marketed and with the right star, a super hero film can find favor with audiences at any time of the year,' said Dergarabedian in an email.
