| On the 12th November 1987 a painting by Vincent van Gogh of Irises, a kind of flower, sold for 30.2 million pounds. At the time it was the most expensivepainting ever sold. However the buyer didn't have enough money to pay for it and it had to be resold. It is now owned by the Getty Museum in Los Angeles which paid 37.6 million pounds.
However since then another van Gogh painting, "The Portrait of Doctor Gachet" has sold for almost 56 million pounds. This is now the second most expensivepainting in the world. The most expensivepainting at the moment is not by Vincent van Gogh but by the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt. It is called "A Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer" and it was sold for nearly 65 million pounds.
