Everyone is afraid of something. Spiders, heights, angry bees. But while spiders and bees can make a picnic challenging, they usually don't get in the way of doing a job. Unfortunately, my fear is public speaking.


人人都会畏惧某种东西,有人怕蜘蛛,有人恐高,有人怕被蜜蜂蜇。好在蜘蛛和蜜蜂虽然会为野餐带来挑战,但一般不会成为你的职场障碍。我可就倒霉了,我怕的是当众讲话。



At one point, my phobia got so bad that when I gave presentations, my right eye would twitch. Not only would I get nervous about my talk, but I would also stress about the possibility of the eye-twitch emerging, which made it hard to actually present my information. (Try reading notes through an eyeball that has a mind of its own.) The stressing, of course, just made the twitchinevitable. It was a vicious circle.


我的恐惧症一度严重到当众陈述时右眼会发生痉挛。我不仅会担心自己的讲话,还担心眼睛会不会痉挛,痉挛一旦出现,就很难陈述自己所要表达的信息了(不信你就试试用一只不听使唤的眼球来阅读笔记)。当然,一紧张就必然会发生痉挛。这就成了恶性循环。



Are there things we can do to fight the fear? Psychologist Sian Beilock, in an interview with NewScientist, has a few tips to alleviate the stress:

Don't over-think it: Beilock's research shows that if you have a well-practicedpresentation, when it is go-time, it is best if it runs on autopilot. When we have practiced a speech to perfection, or taken hundreds of golf shots for example, performing well involves paying less attention rather than more.


不要想太多:贝洛克的研究显示,如果你为演讲做了充分准备,那么登场后顺其自然就好了。当我们已经把演讲练得尽善尽美,或者已经做过数百次高尔夫击球练习,临场表现出色的要诀就是不要太在意。



Put it in writing: Jotting down your worries 'downloads' them so they are less likely to pop up and impact your performance.
