Huawei Technologies Co. said that last year's operating profit likely rose more than 40% compared with 2012, helped by cost cuts and growing sales of software and services for telecom carriers.
The Chinese telecommunications equipment
supplier on Wednesday also forecast
a 10% revenue
increase for 2014 and a similar annual
average growth rate for the next five years. It shrugged off an estimated 8% to 9% 2013 sales growth rate that fell short of its earlier projection
of 10%, with Chief Financial Officer Cathy Meng attributing the shortfall to currency
Ms. Meng painted a bullish picture for the closely held company's prospects, telling reporters that rising sales of consumer
goods such as smartphones as well as equipment
to businesses, would bolster growth as its main business of selling telecom networkequipment
'We are satisfied with that number,' she said, referring to an estimated 6% growth in telecom networking last year compared with 2012. 'Huawei is pursuing sustainable development. We don't want to put all our eggs in one basket.'
She declined to estimate
Huawei's 2013 net profit, saying
the results still need to be audited.
Huawei, the world's second-largest supplier of telecom networking gear after Sweden's Ericsson, said its 2013 operating profit was likely in the range of 28.6 billion
yuan ($4.73 billion) to 29.4 billion
yuan, up as much as 47% from an operating profit of 20 billion
yuan in 2012.
The Shenzhen-based company, which sells smartphones and tablets in addition
to supplying telecom gear, said its revenue
last year likely rose to between 238 billion
yuan and 240 billion
yuan, an increase of between 8% and 9% from 220.2 billion
yuan in 2012.
Growth in Huawei's revenue
and operating profit come at a time when many telecom operators around the world are reluctant
to increase their spending on networking equipment. Still, China's deployment of faster fourth-generation mobile network
technology has created new business opportunities for Huawei.
The company also said that software and services accounted for a larger part of its revenue
in the carriernetwork
business in 2013. It said its enterprise
business, which helps corporate clients build their private campus
networks, still isn't profitable, but Ms. Meng said Huawei still considers the business to be developing.
Over the past several years, Huawei has outpaced many Western rivals in the telecom equipment
market such as Nokia Corp. and Alcatel-Lucent SA. The company generates about two-thirds of its revenue
outside China, with Europe being its largest overseas
market. In the U.S., Huawei has been effectively
shut out of the telecom gear market, after a congressional
report in 2012 recommended that U.S. carriers avoid using equipment
from the Chinese supplier, saying
it posed a national security
threat. Huawei has repeatedly
denied such allegations.
