Explain that British and American children write letters to Father Christmas/Santa.

Reading task 1:

Let's have a look at a letter.  While we read it I want you to answer these questions:
1. Is Laura a girl or a boy? (Laura is a girl – boys don't usually ask for dolls!)
2. What presents does Laura want? (You may ask this in Chinese)

Dear Father Christmas,
I hope you are well.  I have been a good girl this year and I have tried very hard at school.
I would like a bike and some new coloured pencils for Christmas.  I would also like some clothes for my doll. 
I hope you don't get too tired bringing all the toys.  I will leave you some biscuits on the table.

Reading task 2:

Let's have a look at another letter.  While we read it I want you to answer the same question:
1. Is Tom a girl or a boy? (Tom could be a boy or girl but the name Tom is a boy's name)
2. What presents does Tom want? (You may ask this in Chinese)


Dear Santa,
I was good all year and I helped my dad and mom at home.
Please give me a new computer and a pair of football boots.
I will leave some cookies out for you on the table.

Hand out the worksheet and ask the children to match the words with the pictures.

Let's match the words and the pictures. Draw a line from the picture to the
word.

Next ask them to find the picture of a toy that Tom and Laura don't ask for.

What picture don't Tom or Laura ask for?

Next ask the children what other children probably ask for.

What other things do you think children ask for?

Make a list on the board.
