BURIED TREASURE
Students imagine a desert island, draw a map, and then bury treasure on the island. This activity practices prepositions and verbs of movement.
Procedure
Ask students to close their eyes. Tell them to imagine that they are flying over an ocean. They look down and all they can see is the ocean stretching to the horizon. Suddenly they can see an island, a desert island, below them. Tell them to fly around the island three times and to remember all the things that they can see on it.
Give students time to complete their "flight" and then tell them to open their eyes. What different things did they see on the island? Elicit as much vocabulary as possible onto the board about island geography and inhabitants.
Draw the outline of a desert island on the board and compass points. Elicit compass points: north; south; east; west; northeast; southwest etc. Students make their own copies of the drawing.
Each student then takes it in turn to pick something from the vocabulary list and place it on the map (e.g. there's a volcano in the north.). Another student then draws the object in the correct position on the map on the board. The others add the object to their copies of the map. Continue until the map is full.
Tell the students that you have buried some treasure on the map. You are going to give them directions to reach the treasure. Start at an agreed point where a ship can weigh anchor and then give directions to a specific place, using as many prepositions and verbs of movement as possible.
The students draw the route on their copies of their map. When you reach the treasure , tell the students that they must return to the ship as quickly as possible. The students then repeat your directions but in reverse.
Students then do the activity in pairs. Student A chooses a place to bury the treasure and gives student B directions. And vice versa.
For homework, students write an account of their adventures on the island.
