The journey two divers made some time ago to the very deepest point on the earth makes us realize how much of the world still remains to be studied. The two men went down seven miles to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean inside a small steel ball to find out if there are any ocean currents(水流) or signs of life.

It was necessary to set out early, so that the ball would come to the surface in daylight, and so be easily found by the mother ship which would be waiting for it. The divers began preparations early in the morning and soon afterwards, when all was ready, the steel ball disappeared under the surface of the water.

The divers felt as if they were going down steps as they passed through warm and cold layers(层) of water. In time the temperature dropped to freezing point. They kept in touch with the mother ship by telephone telling how they felt. Then, at a depth of 3000 feet, the telephone stopped working and they were quite cut off from the outside world. All went well until some four hours later at 30000 feet, the men were frightened by a loud, cracking noise: even the smallest hole in the ball would have meant instant death. Luckily, though, it was only one of the outer windows that had broken. Soon afterwards, the ball touched the soft ocean floor raising a big cloud of“dust”made up of small dead sea creatures. Here, powerful lights lit up the dark water and the men were surprised to see fish swimming just above them quite untroubled by the great water-pressure. But they did not dare to leave the lights on for long, as the heat from them made the water boil. Quite unexpectedly" title="ad.意外地;突然地">unexpectedly, the telephone began working again and the faint but clear voices of the divers were heard on the mother ship seven miles away. Have you ever been in a meeting while, someone was making a speech and realized suddenly that your mind was a million miles away? You probably felt sorry and made up

your mind to pay attention and never have been told that daydreaming is a waste of time.

“On the contrary,” says L. Giambra, an expert in psychology, "daydreaming is quite necessary. Without it, the mind couldn't get done all the thinking it has to do during a normal day: You can't possibly do all your thinking with a conscious (有意识的) mind. Instead, your unconscious mind is working out problems all the time. Daydreaming then may be one way that the conscious and unconscious states of mind have silent dialogues.”

Early experts in psychology paid no attention to the importance of daydreams or even considered them harmful. At one time daydreaming was thought to be a cause of some mental illnesses. They did not have a better understanding of daydreams until the late 1980s. Eric Klinger, a professor of psychology, is the writer of the book Daydreaming. Klinger says, “We know now that daydreaming is one of the main ways that we organize our lives, learn from our experiences, and plan for our futures: Daydreams really are a window on the things we fear and the things we long for in life.” Daydreams are usually very simple and direct, quite unlike sleep dreams, which may be hard to understand. It's

easier to gain a deep understanding of your life by paying close attention to your daydreams than by trying to examine your sleep dreams carefully, Daydreams help you recognize the difficult situations in your life and find out a possible way of dealing with them. Daydreams cannot be predicted, they move off in unexpected direction which may be creative and full of ideas. For many famous artists and scientists, daydreams were and

are a main source of creative energy.

Tom Dyson tried to find out what his new machine could do. One day he fixed the small box to a flowering plant that was growing in a pot. He didn't say anything at all, but he began to think some cruel thoughts.“I'm going to cut off these flowers. They're getting old and ugly. So I'll cut them off”.

The needle on the machine climbed quickly from zero to 8, then 10,12,15. It stopped at 17. The plant was in trouble! Something was worrying it. Was it fear or sadness? The thought of being cut? The flowers bent their heads. They suddenly looked old and tired, and Tom felt sorry for them. “No, no!” he cried. “I won't cut you. You're my friends. I just want you to grow and be lovely. I'll take you outside, into the sunshine. You'll like that, won't you?”

The flowers lifted their heads slowly and seemed to smile at him. The needle returned to zero. Tom put away the machine, picked up the plant, and walked outside. It

was very nice in the garden that morning.

All plants enjoy their owner's love and care and kindness. They know the sound of their voice. They also seem to understand people's thoughts. So if you have flowers of your own, think about them with love. They will return your kindness in the only way they can; they will grow strong and beautiful.

How to protect children Web fans from unsuitable material online while encouraging them to use the Internet has long been discussed in the US.

For some parents, the Internet can seem like a jungle, filled with danger for their children. But jungles contain wonders as well as danger and with good guides, some education, and a few precautions (预防), the wilds of the Internet can be safely navigated. "Kids have to be online. If we tell our kids they can't be allowed to surf the Internet, we're cutting them off from their future," said an expert.

Most kids have started to use search engines. Many of them are great for finding tons of interesting Internet sites, and they can also locate places where you might not want your kids to go. There are search engines designed just for kids. A certain software contains only sites that have been selected as safe. The most popular way would be to use

what is known as a “content screener”. But this can't be wholly reliable (可靠), and the best thing parents can do is to talk to their kids and let them know what is OK or not OK to see or do on the Internet. Another way is that mum or dad is nearby when the child is surfing the Internet.

A few other tips:

-Don't put the PC in a child's room but keep it in an area where mum or dad can keep an eye on things. That also makes the Internet more of a family activity.

—Ask your child what he or she has been doing and about any friends they make online.

—Tell your child not to give online strangers personal information, especially like address and phone number.

And tell your children never to talk to anyone they meet on line over the phone, send them anything, accept anything from them or agree to meet with them unless you go along.

72. What is the main subject about the passage?

A. Opposing children's online. B. Internet in America.

C. American children going online. D. Appreciating the Internet.

73. What is the best way to protect children from improper material?

A. To talk to the children and persuade them to tell right from wrong.

B. To be nearby when they are surfing the Internet.

C. To fix a content screener on the computer.

D. To buy some search engines for children.

74. Which of the following is right according to the passage?

A. Surfing the Internet is the best way of educating children.

B. Using a content screener is most reliable for keeping children having ways to the Internet.

C. Searching engines can help children to select materials fit for them.

D. Children's not having chances to go to the Internet may have effect on their progress.

75.According to the passage, we can infer that_______.

A. softwares fit for children want programming

B. the Internet contains a lot of harmful sites

C. the Internet will be protected by law

D. a child who is online is in danger
