In a city full of opulent places to stay, Bangkok's Hansar Hotel stands out for being understated.
The Hansar has the aesthetic of a boutique with the footprint
of a much larger hotel: It has 94 rooms, all suites, spread over 18 floors, with adjoining serviced apartments rising to 43 stories. But the hotel, which opened in December, still feels intimate.
The property was designed by the Singapore-based architect
ure" target="_blank" title="n.建筑术；建筑学">architecture
firm WOHA. Wong Mun Summ, one of WOHA's founding directors and the Hansar's principalarchitect
, tells Scene Asia how it differs from other high-end Bangkok hotels:
该酒店由新加坡沃哈建筑事务所（WOHA）设计。沃哈事务所创始董事、汉莎酒店的首席设计师黄文森（Wong Mun Summ）向"风尚亚洲"记者讲述了汉莎酒店与曼谷其他高端酒店在设计上的不同之处：
Inspired by temples: Mr. Wong says he and his team 'looked around and realized that one of the nicest things were the temples in Bangkok.'
Thus, the building's exterior
is affixed with bronze-colored screens inspired by the color of the city's golden temples. The mesh is also designed to provide shade and privacy
without compromising views of the grounds at the nearby Royal Bangkok Sports Club.
于是，受曼谷这些金碧辉煌的寺庙的启发，他们给酒店的外 设计了一层青铜色幕 。这种网状结构还能提供荫凉，感觉很私密，同时又不影响眺望附近曼谷皇家体育俱乐部
（Royal Bangkok Sports Club）的风光。
Most of Bangkok's buildings are 'actually quite dull,' Mr. Wong says, but the Hansar's golden-bronze hue 'glows nicely
'We felt this building needs to be proud of being Thai,' he says. 'That's critical.'
A focus on simplicity
: Many of the city's other five-star hotels are elaborately decorated, but Mr. Wong says his team wanted a more natural, organic
'We were trying
to go back to simplicity
to create luxury,' he says. Bangkok can be quite chaotic, so they aimed for an uncomplicated design as a counterweight.
The lobby features a large staircase
made of teak that leads to an upper level, where the front desk is located. A large, multicolored silk stitching of a flowering creeper adorns one wall.
Guest rooms have hardwood floors and are decked out in gray and beige tones, while the walls and headboards are covered in Thai silks.
: Although Bangkok's tropicalclimate
supports a wide variety
, landscaping 'is hardly being used on an architect
ural scale,' Mr. Wong says.
The floors above the lobby are covered in green, and frangipani trees are used throughout the exterior
. 'That can't be duplicated in very many cities around the world' where the climate
, he says.
Some guest rooms even have a large wall of verdant plants encased in glass, designed to give guests a dose of the natural world amid the high-rise, urban setting
. In addition
, small gardens are positioned on various platforms along the structure's exterior
, providing greenery that can be seen from the windows.
A residential feeling
: Mr. Wong says that in a place like New York City, residential and retail
'You can walk around and find delis downstairs
and people in apartments above,' he says. But this isn't the case in some parts of central Bangkok, like along some stretches of the touristy Sukhumvit Road, where the feel is predominantly commercial.
So the Hansar's ground floor is designed to be open, with a more residential atmosphere
. The bar and restaurant
are easily accessible
, so that guests can walk in and feel comfortable, he says.
The hotel has attracted positive
reviews from travelers so far. In the seven months since its launch
, it has achieved the No. 1 ranking on TripAdvisor's list of some 632 Bangkok hotels.
'We don't want to be just a building,' says Hotel Manager Jeerasak Loturit, who formerly
worked at Bangkok's Shangri-La hotel.
The city's more traditionally lavish
five star hotels 'all have the same ambiance,' Mr. Jeerasak says. 'Here you see and feel different things. We're not repeating old designs.'
