36. The Fox Who Had Lost His Tail

A Fox caught in a trap, escaped
with the loss of his "brush." Henceforth feeling his life a burden from the shame and ridicule to which he was exposed, he schemed to bring all the other Foxes into a like condition with himself, that in the common loss he might the bet
ter conceal his own deprivation. He assembled a good many Foxes, and publicly advised them to cut off their tails, saying "that they would not only look much better without them, but that they would get rid of the weight of the brush, w
hich was a very great inconvenience." One of them interrupting him said, "If you had not yourself lost your tail, my friend, you would not thus counsel us."

36. 失掉尾巴的狐狸
一只狐狸从陷阱里逃出来,失掉了它的尾巴。 从此以后,它便被同伴嘲笑着,因此觉得很难受,它便想要使所有的狐狸全和它自己一样,如果大家都没有尾巴,它也不致于因为缺陷而难过了。 它聚集了许多狐狸,假装诚恳劝告它们说:「去掉尾巴而没有尾巴,非但好看得多,而且还因为减去了它的重量,轻松方便了许多。」 那些狐狸当中,有一只打断它的话插嘴说:「我的朋友,如果你自己不曾失去你的尾巴,你也不会这样劝告我们吧。」
