If you are often humiliated, belittled or called names by a colleague, you could be facing a workplace bully. The bully's remarks and actions may seem harmless at first but they are meant to be offensive and to show you in a poor light. You can't go running to your boss with every little complaint, so how should you deal with this?

Here are five situations a bully might put you in and ways to deal with them:

1. Constant prodding at meetings

Some bullies take pleasure in interrupting you when you are making a presentation or are talking in an important meeting. They may ask questions unrelated to the presentation, or questions that could have waited till the end.

Such prodding can make anyone fume but experts say that ideally you should maintain your cool during the meeting.

'Do not show anger and impatience. Be calm. Reaction is what such individuals want,' says Capt. Rahul Sharma, head of human resources at India Infoline Ltd., a Mumbai-based financial services firm.

Some bullies need a louder message. 'Be assertive and ask your colleague to wait till the end of the presentation,' says Rajendra Ghag, head of human resources at insurance company HDFC Life. 'Or, answer the question politely (but) make the point that the question was totally unrelated to the topic of the presentation.'

If your colleague contradicts what you are saying, you could stop your speech to ask him or her to provide a solution. Often, this could turn the tables as the bully might not be prepared with an answer.

2. Taking credit for your work

Another tactic that a bully might use is to take credit for your work.

This would work if your manager is not up-to-date about what you are doing. As soon as you realize that this is happening, you should start making a regular effort to update your manager about your work and achievements.

'You are your best spokesperson,' says Dr. Samir Parikh, chief of the mental health and behavioral sciences department at Max Healthcare, a Delhi-based hospital chain.

If your boss knows what you're working on, it'll be hard for someone else to take credit for it.

You could also try talking about your tasks and achievements in team discussions. This could put some fear into the bully's mind 'that the next time you might mention names,' says Ms. Pandey.

In general, be careful about sharing your ideas freely because the bully could present them as his or her own.

3. Burdening you with extra work

Newcomers to an organization sometimes get stuck with work over and above their job description.

If you have just realized that your colleague is passing on his or her work to you, try to get clarity about your role. Then, figure out how best to deny these extra tasks. You can say something like, 'I am already on a deadline or busy with something,' says Dr. Parikh.

If the colleague still pesters you, then it's time to inform your manager about it.

4. Jokes at your expense

If your colleague often makes fun of you or passes sarcastic remarks about you or your work, it may be more than just banter.

Be careful not to react with anger in front of other team-members otherwise you might come across as someone who can't take a joke. If possible, try to temper the situation by joining in the joke. 'Humor is natural and the best defense,' says Dr. Parikh.

If your wit fails, then it's time to take the bully on a date.

Over a cup of coffee, you can confront the bully on his or her behavior.

'Talking it out helps a lot as most bullies are cowards and avoid confrontation,' says Richard Lobo, corporate human relations manager and head of employee relations at Infosys Technologies Ltd.

If the bully refuses to meet you privately, try to corner the person in office.

Also, share every incident that transpires between you and the bully with a trusted colleague. This helps in gathering support.

But be careful what you tell your colleagues: You don't want something personal reaching the bully's ears.

5. Indecent remarks

5.下流话

Women at work sometimes have to hear indecent remarks or put up with glances that make them uncomfortable. This behavior might be so subtle that there may be nothing specific to pinpoint to a manager.

But experts suggest taking action as soon as possible. If unchecked, it could lead to sexual harassment in a worst-case scenario. The sooner you speak up the better.

'Confide in a trusted colleague or your mentor,' says Ms. Pandey. The colleague can help report this person to your manager, if you find it embarrassing to do so.

If this doesn't work, report to the top managers. 'Usually such reporting brings forth other victims of such behavior,' says Ms. Pandey.

If possible, gather evidence. When you see the bully approaching and if you feel the conversation could go in an uncomfortable direction, keep a recorder handy. This can help substantiate your claims.

'Tape it or record it. We all have recorders on our mobiles,' says Capt. Sharma.
