一鼓作气
Yìgǔzuòqì  

       春秋战国时代，齐国出兵攻打鲁国。在长勺这个地方，齐军首先擂响战鼓向鲁军发动进攻，鲁庄公正准备出兵，一位叫曹刿的人说："现在还不到时候，再等一等吧"。齐军见鲁军不应战，便再一次擂响战鼓，但曹刿仍然按兵不动。接着，齐军又一次擂起战鼓，向鲁军挑战，但曹刿还是命令军队不要战斗。 齐军三次准备进攻，都不见鲁军应战，认为鲁军不敢打了，大家纷纷放松下来开始休息。这时，曹刿对鲁庄公说："进攻的时机到了。" 随着鲁军擂响战鼓，早就按捺不住的士兵奋勇出击，齐军没有来得及防备，四处溃逃。战斗胜利后，鲁庄公问曹刿："为什么要等齐军擂了三次鼓后才能出兵?"曹刿回答说："打仗，最重要的是士气。擂第一遍鼓时，士气最旺盛；第二次击鼓时，士兵的勇气已经减退；敲第三遍鼓时，士气已经快没有了。这时我军擂鼓进攻，用士气旺盛的军队去进攻松懈的军队，那当然能取胜啦!" 

In the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, the Qi Kingdom sent armies to attack Lu Kingdom. The two troops met in the place of Changshao. Qi troop first beat the war drum and prepared to attack. Troop of Lu were going to meet the head-on when a man named Caogui stopped them and said to their head, Lu Zhuanggong, "It's not the time to launch an attack yet. Wait for a moment." Then the troop of Qi beat their drum for the second time to challenge their enemy, but Cao still asked his army to wait. Qi troop beat their drum for the third time but still got no response. The soldier of Qi thought that their enemy must be frightened and dare not to accept the battle. So they became relaxed. At this time, Caogui said to Lu Zhuanggong, "Now it's time to attack." Then they beat drum and launched the battle. Having waited for a long time, the Lu soldiers were eager to attack. With this accumulated energy, they won the victory easily. After the battle, Lu Zhuanggong asked Caogui, "Why should we wait till Qi beat their drum for the third time?" Cao answered, "In a battle, the vital thing is soldier's morale. It is the highest at the first drum, and is lessened at the second drum, and it almost disappears at the third drum. When their morale becomes the lowest, we beat the first drum and our soldiers are at their highest morale. Then we are bound to win!"
