故事 Story 

        一位男生暗恋一位每天放学都会遇到的女孩,但一直没有机会接近
        一天,他跟踪女孩到一家面馆,终于鼓起勇气跟她说话:"小姐!你什么?"
        女孩:"牛肉面。"
A boy had a crush on a girl he met every day after school, but he had no chance to get to know her.
One day, he followed her to a noodle house and mustered his courage to talk to her: "Hello, 你叫什么(nǐ jiào shén me) (Can I have your name)?"
However, to his surprise, the girl answered: "I want beef noodles."

Different meanings of "叫(jiào)":

1、本义为"呼","喊"。

Originally, "叫(jiào)" means "to cry, shout, or exclaim".
e.g.:  他大声叫喊救命。He cried out for help.

2、招唤,招呼
如:"老李!"他大声叫道。
"叫(jiào)" also means "to summon, to beckon, or to call one's name", etc.

3、诉说

 "叫(jiào)" can indicate "complain", etc.

 "叫(jiào)" also means "to allow/permit somebody to do something".

短文中,这个男生本来想问女生的名字,"你叫什么?",而恰恰是在面馆,所以这句话被那个女生理解成了"你想点什么饭?"
In this short story, the boy used "叫(jiào)" to ask for the girl's name with the question "你叫什么(nǐ jiào shén me)"(What's your name). But because the conversation took place in a noodle house, the girl misunderstood the question here as the elliptical way of asking "你叫什么(饭)?(What do you want to order)", and thus replied "I want beef noodles" accordingly.
